📣 Dear future first-semester students! (esp. B.Sc. Business Administration and Economics)

Frankly speaking: Studying at the WiSo means immersing yourself in analytical thinking and an essential tool for this is maths 📈 — a challenge no doubt, but our voluntary “Preliminary Course on Mathematical Methods” by the Department of Econometrics and Statistics will help you get you up to the level you need to start! (and we would have liked to have had that in the upper school already)

As you read in your welcome letter, the voluntary self-testing session starts tomorrow, before things really get going on Wednesday!

Don’t miss it, you still can participate and registration is not complicate.

PS: The course for becoming BI students will start on 14 September.

AI for homework: what does it mean for students aged 13 to 18? 🤖📚

A new study involving the WiSo Faculty at the University of Cologne shows: The more teenagers use AI for homework, the more willing their parents are to pay for it.

📈 When assumed AI use increased from 20% to 80%, parents’ willingness to pay rose by more than 60%.
Interestingly, information about potential learning risks changed parents’ attitudes towards AI, but hardly affected their willingness to pay. Instead, support for school-wide rules or bans increased from 44% to 57%.
The study shows how strongly social dynamics can influence the adoption of new technologies.

🚀 From AI experimentation to real business impact

Generative AI is already transforming how organisations work. The next step? Turning AI potential into scalable solutions, smarter processes and a clear strategy.

Our three-day executive seminar “Generative AI & Agentic AI for Business Leaders” at the University of Cologne Business School is designed for executives and decision-makers who want to move beyond experimentation and create real business value with AI.

Participants will explore how to:

🤖 Navigate the shift from Generative AI to Agentic AI
💡 Identify high-impact AI use cases
🗺 Build a strategic AI roadmap
⚙️ Understand how intelligent agents can transform processes and decision-making

📅 5–7 November 2026
📍 University of Cologne

The question is no longer whether AI will transform business — but how your organisation will turn its potential into action.

🌬️🏡 Wind power: climate protection vs. local acceptance

Germany is a global leader in the expansion of renewable energy, particularly wind energy. But what are the local economic effects of wind turbines? 🌱

WiSo researcher Dr. Félix Michelet, together with Sven Heim from PSL University and Mario Liebensteiner from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, investigates the negative and positive externalities associated with the location of wind turbines in Germany.

Their study, “Spin city: Local externalities of wind turbines,” finds that the location of wind turbines reduces property prices in affected municipalities by 1.9%. The effect is not linear: the construction of the first wind turbines has a significantly larger effect of −5.5%, while additional turbines in areas where wind turbines are already present have no statistically significant effect. 📉

The study also finds declines in local tourism, housing rents, and the number of building permits for homes and houses. At the same time, each installed wind turbine increases a municipality’s local tax capacity through higher trade tax revenues by 1.8%. 💶
