IWRA Award for researcher at TH Köln 🏆

🏅 Dr. Hassan Aboelnga from TH Köln has been awarded the IWRA Water Drop Award for his contributions to linking science, policy and practical implementation in the fields of water and climate. He is the first scientist in Germany to receive this honor.

🏙️ Aboelnga's work includes the development of the Integrated Urban Water Security Index (IUWSI): a practical, data-based instrument for implementing the UN Framework for Urban Water Security. The IUWSI has already been applied in several water-scarce cities around the world and provides decision-makers with valuable insights to improve urban resilience and sustainability.

🤝 His work combines scientific analysis with policy and practical implementation – including in the iWater project, which promotes partnerships between science and industry in Egypt and Germany.

💬 “Dr. Aboelnga’s recognition perfectly encapsulates TH Köln’s core values: academic rigor, innovative strength, and international commitment. His impactful work truly exemplifies our university’s dedication to seamlessly blending research and education with practical application, particularly in the critical and future-defining field of sustainable water management”, said Prof. Dr. Lars Ribbe, Dean of the Faculty of Spatial Development and Infrastructure Systems.

🎓 Aboelnga holds a Master's degree in Integrated Water Resources Management from the TH Köln - University of Applied Sciences and the University of Jordan. He also holds a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Kassel and a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Mansoura University in Egypt.

🏅 The Water Drop Award of the International Water Resources Association (IWRA) is one of the most important international awards for young professionals under the age of 35 who excel in the water sector through leadership, innovative approaches and impact-oriented work.
