International Joint Master's Students Conclude Study Visit at UNU Resource Nexus

The second cohort of the International Joint Master's in Water Security and Global Change recently concluded their study visit at UNU Resource Nexus in Dresden.

As part of the Global ABCD Centre, connecting Aachen, Bangkok, Chennai, and Dresden, students explored the United Nations system, the Resource Nexus approach, and practical tools that can support their future professional careers. Through workshops on Scenario Planning Extreme, facilitation, and advocacy, as well as discussions with researchers, they gained hands-on experience and insights designed to complement their academic studies with real-world applications.

We thank the cohort for an engaging week of learning, exchange, and collaboration, and wish them every success as they continue their journey at RWTH Aachen University.

DRESDEN-concept Summer Social brings Dresden’s research community together

The DRESDEN-concept Summer Social at Saloppe provided an opportunity for colleagues from science and cultural organisations across Dresden to reconnect, exchange ideas, and network in a relaxed setting. Several colleagues represented UNU Resource Nexus at the event, which brought together around 200 guests from across the association.

As a member of DRESDEN-concept, UNU Resource Nexus actively contributes to the association’s activities, whether through joint outreach initiatives to promote the association and its members, collaborative education and research activities, joint publications, or exchanges on administrative matters, where we work together to identify synergies and learn from one another.

DRESDEN-concept brings together 47 partner institutions, including research institutions, universities, and cultural institutions. UNU Resource Nexus joined as an international affiliate in January 2020.

Publication Spotlight

How ready are stakeholders to embrace Payments for Ecosystem Services?

Our doctoral researcher, Shanali Fernando, together with Karl-Heinz Feger, Lulu Zhang, and Edeltraud Guenther, investigates this question in their newly published article on stakeholder perspectives from Sri Lanka.

The study explores how different stakeholder groups, including buyers, sellers, and intermediaries, perceive Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) in Sri Lanka. The findings highlight varying levels of confidence and willingness to engage with PES and underscore the importance of early knowledge sharing, stakeholder engagement, and collaborative approaches to support sustainable resource management.

The research contributes valuable insights into the institutional conditions needed to successfully implement PES schemes in developing country contexts where governance arrangements continue to evolve.

Celebrating Culture, Community and Diversity in Dresden

For the second year now, we were pleased to join thousands of people at Dresden is(s)t bunt, a celebration of the city’s diversity, culture and community.

Through our stall, the UNU Resource Nexus team had the opportunity to engage with members of the Dresden community, introduce them to our work, and share bits of cultures and culinary traditions from different parts of the world.

The afternoon and the evening provided an opportunity for meaningful encounters and conversations, alongside an appreciation of culinary diversity, culture, and hospitality.

Dresden is(s)t bunt is a strong reflection of the diversity that characterises Dresden and the many communities that contribute to the city’s vibrant social fabric.

Welcoming Prof. Daniel Karthe as Director of UNU Resource Nexus

We are delighted to share that Prof. Dr. Daniel Karthe has officially assumed the role of Director of UNU Resource Nexus, succeeding Prof. Dr. Edeltraud Guenther.

Having served as Deputy Director, Prof. Karthe brings broad experience, institutional knowledge and a deep understanding of the institute's mission and global partnerships.

As Director, he will collaborative efforts in research and education to advance integrated resource management. He is an environmental scientist with extensive international experience, particularly on the Resource Nexus approach that addresses complex environmental challenges by considering environmental resources and their interconnections.

Throughout his career, he has developed and led multidisciplinary research and capacity-building initiatives across Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America, working closely with governments, universities, international organizations, and development partners. He will focus on strengthening science-policy interfaces and translating research into practical solutions that support sustainable and resource-resilient development.

We warmly congratulate Prof. Karthe and look forward to the continued contributions of UNU Resource Nexus to sustainable development, evidence-informed decision-making and international cooperation under his leadership.

Recognition Day at UNU Resource Nexus

At UNU Resource Nexus Recognition Day, we celebrated the colleagues who contribute to our institute in ways that go beyond their everyday roles, helping to build a stronger, more connected community.

From supporting colleagues through the Buddy Programme, representing doctoral researchers, and participating in the UNU Mentoring Programme coordinated by UNU Headquarters, these contributions play an important role in shaping our institutional culture.

We also launched the FLORES Award, a new recognition celebrating outstanding contributions to the UNU Resource Nexus community.

Congratulations to all the colleagues honoured during Recognition Day. Thank you for your continued commitment and for the many ways you help strengthen the UNU Resource Nexus community.

Restoring Landscapes After Mining: Join Us at COP17

What does effective post-mining landscape restoration look like in practice?

At COP17 in Mongolia, UNU Resource Nexus is bringing together experts and practitioners for a focused workshop on the fundamentals of post-mining land restoration. Participants will explore soil rehabilitation techniques, ecosystem planning and restoration strategies, as well as practical approaches to stakeholder engagement and communication.

The workshop builds on UNU Resource Nexus's experience in this field, following a successful series of events in Europe and Africa.

The session will be moderated by Dr. Alexey Alekseenko and Ms. Yubin Yang, with leading experts in the field contributing to it: Prof. Daniel Karthe, Dr. Gareth Simpson, Prof. Arne Cierjacks, and Prof. Martin Kressner.
