Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini Recognized Again Among the Highest Cited Researchers Worldwide by Research.com

The 5th edition of Research.com (►https://research.com/scientists-rankings/materials-science ) is available online. The platform presents a comprehensive ranking of researchers globally, which is based on data combined from various data sources including OpenAlex and CrossRef. The methodology behind the rankings is detailed on the Research.com website. The position of a researcher in the ranking is based on a researcher's D-index (Discipline H-index), which includes publications and citation values for an examined discipline. In the field of Materials Science, Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini (►https://research.com/u/aldo-r-boccaccini ) is ranked 10th in Germany and 209th worldwide. Notably, 27 materials scientists affiliated with FAU are included in this list. In total, over 12,851 scientists in the discipline of Materials Science were evaluated worldwide. Prof. Boccaccini said: "I am honored to be listed again in this platform. To be included in such high position in the "Best Materials Science Scientists Ranking" both in Germany and worlwide alongside so many excellent colleagues is both rewarding and deeply appreciated."

Doctoral thesis success: Francesco Iorio

Congratulations to Francesco Iorio for successfully defending his doctoral thesis titled “Innovation in tendon biomimetic scaffolds production” on 11th May, 2026.
Francesco completed his doctoral project in our Institute, supervised by Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini in co-tutelle with University of Teramo, Italy, co-supervised by Prof. Valentina Russo and Prof. Barbara Barboni. The project was carried out in the frame of the Doctoral Training Network Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions “PERSPECTIVES FOR FUTURE INNOVATION IN TENDON REPAIR” (P4FiT), (►https://www.p4fit.eu/ ) of which Prof. Boccaccini was a principal investigator, coordinated by Prof. Helder Santos.

The defense was conducted online and the members of the doctoral defense committee were: apl. Prof. Rosiwal (FAU), Prof. Dorothea Brüggemann (Univ. of Applied Sci., Bremen), Prof. Luisa Pascucci (University of Perugia, Italy), Prof. Danijela Gregurec (FAU), Prof. Giovanna Della Porta (Univ. of Salerno, Italy), Prof. Alessia Peserico (Univ. of Teramo) and Prof. Boccaccini. After the successful defense of the doctoral thesis, Prof. Boccaccini highlighted the comprehensive experimental work carried out by Francesco and the innovative results obtained. In this project a new family of multifunctional fibrous scaffolds based on the smart combination of biopolymers, including therapeutic ion releasing systems, was developed and characterised with focus on applications in tendon repair. The project involved research at University of Teramo and other partner universities in P4FiT. A paper has been already published [1] and three other papers have been submitted. Many congratulations to Francesco for the successful defense of his doctoral thesis, we wish Francesco all the best in his future career.

Start of Bilateral Project: “Development of injectable bioactive glass–hydrogel composites for osteoimmunomodulatory bone regeneration” with Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen, Charles University https://www.linkedin.com/company/charles-university/, Czech Republic, funded by BTHA / BAYHOST

Our bilateral project: “Development of injectable bioactive glass–hydrogel composites for osteoimmunomodulatory bone regeneration” with the group of Dr. Petra Kocánek Chocholatá at Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen (► https://lfp.cuni.cz/en/faculty-of-medicine-in-pilsen/ ), Charles University , (► https://lfp.cuni.cz/en/ ) Czech Republic, started on 8th May with the visit of Dr. Chocholatá to our Institute. The project is funded by Bayerisch-Tschechische Hochschulagentur (BTHA) (► https://www.btha.cz/de/ ) / Bavarian Academic Center for Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe (BAYHOST). (► https://www.uni-regensburg.de/bayhost )
Dr. Chocholatá presented the talk “Hydrogel scaffolds for bone tissue engineering”. We discussed with Petra the first results of our collaborative project, led on our side by Hannah Kisseland Andrada-Ioana Damian-Buda (PhD students), focusing on bioactive glass nanoparticles incorporated into injectable hydrogels for bone regeneration. We are looking forward to the next steps of this exciting project, which involves visit of member of our Institute to the Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen, Charles University.
