People To Know 👩‍🔧👩‍💼👨‍💻👨‍💼

Today, we would like to introduce Dr. Junhak Pak 👋🏻

Hello, my name is Dr. Junhak Pak, and I am from South Korea. 🇰🇷 I work at POSCO, South Korea’s leading steel company, where I conduct research on motor grade electrical steel (non-oriented electrical steel). ⚙️🔬 Although my current research focuses on electrical steel, I also have experience working with low carbon bainite and wire rod steels, particularly hyper eutectoid carbon steels.

I will be staying at IMF for one year as a visiting researcher. 📚 I came here together with my daughter.
Returning to a university research environment nearly 14 years after completing my Ph.D. in South Korea feels truly meaningful. I already find TU Freiberg to be a wonderful place, and I hope to build good relationships with many colleagues during my stay here. 🤝

Heute möchten wir euch Dr. Junhak Pak vorstellen 👋🏻

Hallo, mein Name ist Dr. Junhak Pak und ich komme aus Südkorea. 🇰🇷 Ich arbeite bei POSCO, Südkoreas führendem Stahlunternehmen, wo ich auf dem Gebiet des Elektrostahls für Motoren (nicht orientierter Elektrostahl) forsche. ⚙️🔬 Obwohl sich meine aktuelle Forschung auf Elektrostahl konzentriert, habe ich auch Erfahrung mit kohlenstoffarmem Bainit- und Walzdrahtstahl, insbesondere mit hypereutektoiden Kohlenstoffstählen.

Ich werde ein Jahr lang als Gastwissenschaftler am IMF tätig sein. 📚 Ich bin zusammen mit meiner Tochter hierhergekommen.
Es bedeutet mir sehr viel, fast 14 Jahre nach Abschluss meiner Promotion in Südkorea wieder in ein universitäres Forschungsumfeld zurückzukehren. Ich finde die TU Freiberg bereits jetzt wunderbar und hoffe, während meines Aufenthalts hier gute Beziehungen zu vielen Kollegen aufzubauen. 🤝

Einblick in die Forschung und Wissenschaft von morgen! 🔬✨

Gestern durften wir eine Schülergruppe bei uns im Institut begrüßen. Auf dem Programm stand zunächst ein Fachvortrag der Institutsleitung, der den Jugendlichen erste Einblicke in unsere aktuellen Forschungsthemen und den akademischen Alltag bot.

Im Anschluss ging es direkt in die Praxis: Bei einem geführten Rundgang durch unsere Technika konnten die Schülerinnen und Schüler unsere Versuchsanlagen hautnah erleben und erfahren, wie aus Theorie konkrete Anwendungen entstehen.

Wir bedanken uns herzlich für das große Interesse, die spannenden Fragen und den gelungenen Austausch – und freuen uns, den einen oder die andere in Zukunft vielleicht als Studierende bei uns wiederzusehen! 📚👋

A glimpse into the research and science of tomorrow! 🔬✨

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming a group of school pupils to our institute. The programme began with a presentation by the institute’s management, which gave the pupils an initial insight into our current research topics and everyday academic life.

Afterwards, it was straight into the practical side of things: during a guided tour of our technical facilities, the pupils were able to experience our experimental set-ups at first hand and learn how theory is turned into practical applications.

We’d like to say a big thank you for the keen interest, the fascinating questions and the fruitful discussion – and we look forward to perhaps seeing some of you back here as students in the future! 📚👋

🍦☀️ 36 °C? Da hilft nur eins: Eis!

Auch zwischen Forschung, Lehre und Metallformung darf eine kleine Abkühlung nicht fehlen. Deshalb haben wir die sommerlichen Temperaturen kurzerhand für eine gemeinsame Eispause vor dem Institut genutzt. 😎

Manchmal entstehen die besten Ideen eben nicht nur im Labor, sondern auch mit einem Eis in der Hand. 🍨

Die Vorlesungen sind vorbei, die Bibliotheken voll und die Kaffeemaschinen laufen heiß. Die Prüfungsphase steht vor der Tür!

Zukunft erfolgreich umgeformt! 🛠️🔥
Die Werkstoffwoche 2026 an der Fakultät für Werkstoffwissenschaften und Werkstofftechnologie war ein voller Erfolg. Und natürlich waren wir vom Institut für Metallformung auch mit am Start! Eine Woche lang haben neugierige Köpfe bei uns die Schulbank gegen die Maschinenhalle getauscht.
Von glühendem Metall bis zu tonnenschwerem Druck: Schön, dass ihr da wart und live erlebt habt, wie viel Power in der Werkstoffwissenschaft steckt!

Materials Week 2026 at the faculty of Materials Science and Materials Technology was a resounding success. And of course, we from the Institute of Metal Forming were there too! For an entire week, curious minds swapped their classroom desks for the machine shop.
From red-hot metal to pressure weighing several metric tons: We’re glad you were there and got to experience firsthand just how much power there is in materials science!

🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️ REWE Team Challenge 2026 in Dresden 🎉

Mit acht Läuferinnen und Läufern waren wir bei der diesjährigen REWE Team Challenge in Dresden am Start. 💪

Die regelmäßigen Trainingseinheiten unserer „IMF Laufschmiede“ haben sich definitiv ausgezahlt – mit viel Teamgeist, guter Laune und jeder Menge Motivation ging es gemeinsam über die Strecke. 🏅

Ein großes Dankeschön auch an unsere Unterstützerinnen und Unterstützer am Streckenrand, die uns lautstark angefeuert haben. 📣👏 Ohne euch wäre die Stimmung nur halb so gut gewesen!

Wir freuen uns schon auf das nächste gemeinsame Laufevent. 🚀

🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️ REWE Team Challenge 2026 in Dresden 🎉

We had eight runners competing at this year’s REWE Team Challenge in Dresden. 💪

The regular training sessions at our „IMF Laufschmiede“ definitely paid off—we tackled the course together with plenty of team spirit, good cheer, and lots of motivation. 🏅

A big thank you also to our supporters lining the course who cheered us on loudly. 📣👏 Without you, the atmosphere would have been only half as good!

We’re already looking forward to our next running event together. 🚀
