Eastern Europe in the Twentieth Century: Comparative Historical Experience

at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena is an institute for the interdisciplinary and transnational study of 20th century history of East Central and Southeastern Europe. The institute was created in October 2010 as the ninth of the Käte Hamburger Centers funded by the German Federal Minist

ry of Education and Research (BMBF). Joachim von Puttkamer, who led the Kolleg during its first phase of funding (2010-2016). PD Dr. Michal Kopeček took over the co-directorship from Prof. Włodzimierz Borodziej in 2016 for the second phase of funding (2016 - 2022). An international team of visiting fellows and permanent academic staff conducts research at the Kolleg in an environment of intensive scholarly dialogue and exchange on the history of Eastern Europe in the 20th century. There are five main areas of research: violence; statehood; modernity; intellectual horizons; and history and the public sphere. Our transnational perspective on the entire region of East Central and Southeastern Europe makes it possible to identify common lines of development and specific differences among countries, and to build a new foundation for a historical analysis of historical events in this region.

Das Forum ist eine internationale Plattform, die Expert:innen, Kulturschaffende und Entscheidungsträger:innen aus der Ukraine, Polen, Deutschland und Frankreich zusammenbringt. Im Fokus stehen die Rolle von Kultur in Krisenzeiten, ihre Bedeutung für nationale Sicherheit und ihr Potenzial als Instrument der Resilienz bei Krieg und hybriden Bedrohungen.

Die Veranstaltung richtet sich an Fachleute aus Kultur, Politik, Sicherheits- und Verteidigungssektoren sowie internationale Organisationen.

Das Forum findet auf Deutsch und Englisch statt.

Die CEU Invisible University for Ukraine bietet seit dem Sommer 2022 Online-Kurse und Vorlesungen für ukrainische Studierende an, als Reaktion auf den Angriffskrieg Russlands gegen die Ukraine. Getragen wird sie von der Central European University in Budapest und Wien; unsere Universität ist über das Imre Kertész Kolleg Jena beteiligt.

Nun wurde der Invisible University for Ukraine die renommierte Brown Democracy Medal des The McCourtney Institute for Democracy der Penn State University verliehen. "Diese Auszeichnung ist eine enorme Ermutigung, das Format in dieser Form weiterzuführen", sagt unser Osteuropaexperte und Direktor des Imre-Kertész-Kollegs Prof. Dr. Joachim von Puttkamer.
