Rethinking Math Education: Making It Inclusive for All! 🔊📐

Did you know that teaching math inclusively requires more than just subject knowledge? It’s true! Empowering every student means equipping teachers with the right tools and strategies.

Last week, University of Turin hosted an inspiring workshop, “𝘈 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘌𝘢𝘤𝘩, 𝘢 𝘛𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘈𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘈𝘭𝘭: 𝘛𝘰𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴 𝘐𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘗𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘉𝘦𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘥 𝘚𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴.”, as part of a two-day training for secondary school teachers.
At the heart of the training was the innovative AudioFunctions+ App—developed as part of the Erasmus+ project.
This unique educational tool transforms mathematical functions into sound, making complex concepts accessible and interactive for students with visual impairments.

Many thanks to Carola Manolino and Erika Brunetto to make this possible

Sonairgraph is in the testing phase!

Since the begining of this year, we started the tests for AudioFunctions+
Our partners in Brno, Czech Republic, have already done a great job!

If you are a visual impaired student or you know one, please send us a message!
We would love to hear your feedback.
This free tool allows young people with visual impairments to learn mathematics.

See more about the project on our webpage https://sonairgraph.unito.it/ and test the application

Sonairgraph is an innovative Erasmus+ educational project, dedicated to students and pupils with visual impairments. Its aim is to facilitate the learning of mathematics through a digital application that transforms mathematical functions into sounds. By using audio functions, Sonairgraph enables users to perceive and analyze complex mathematical concepts in an accessible and interactive way.

Through collaboration between educational institutions across Europe and IT specialists, Sonairgraph offers a new way to explore mathematics, supporting inclusion and equal access to education.

Test the application,s hare your impressions, and contribute to inclusive education!

From November 24-26, 2025, our colleagues from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany participated at the Math4VIP project workshop , hosted by Philipps University Marburg Germany. The event focused on making mathematics accessible to blind and visually impaired individuals.

Lukas provided a demonstration of Audiofunctions+ to approximately 35 attendees, including specialized teachers and blind university students. The tool was met with enthusiasm, highlighting its potential in academic settings. The session resulted in highly positive feedback and generated new requests for features designed to handle complex mathematical tasks.

The Audiofunctions+ trials in Italian schools continue! Last week we worked with some students from IIS "Galileo Galilei" in Florence. The students, divided into pairs or groups of three, were able to listen to and comment on the sonification of some mathematical functions, giving us important feedback on how to improve the software. Thanking once again the students, the teachers, and the school's principal for believing in this project. Next destination...Czech Republic!

📢 Audiofunctions+ enters the school gates!

🎶 The first educational test of the SONAIRGRAPH project began at the IST "Loperfido-Olivetti" school in Matera (Italy)
https://www.instagram.com/itcgmatera/?hl=it
🎶 Just before their winter vacation, the students joined this experiment with curiosity and enthusiasm and discovered Audiofunctions+, or how to do mathematics through sonification techniques.
🎶 We had positive feedback and this first experience will help us to improve the tool, so we invite you once again to try it out: https://sonairgraph.unito.it

🎶 Many thanks to the students, the teachers, and the school's principal for this opportunity! Many thanks ITCG Loperfido Olivetti Matera

📌 On the 3rd and 4th of December, the University of Valle d’Aosta, in collaboration with the Laboratory Polin of the University of Torino, organised and hosted the Conference SeMa - Sensing Mathematics for inclusion: A dialogue between special education and mathematics education https://www.sema.unito.it/home-page

📌The conference offered a perfect opportunity to present the first results of the SONAIRGRAPH project, such as the new version of Audiofunctions! The new app was presented through a workshop and a presentation led by Mattia Ducci (UniTo) and Alessandro Spagnuolo (UniVdA).

📌In addition, the work conducted on sonification was presented in the plenary session "Beyond mathematics accessibility: towards inclusive teaching even in the presence of sensory disabilities" by Carola Manolino (UniVdA), Erika Brunetto, Cristian Bernageggi and Tiziana Armano (UniTo).

Thanks to everyone who participated and contributed to making this event a success!

🌍 Celebrating International Day of People with Disabilities 🤝

💙 On December 3rd, we recognize the International Day of People with Disabilities – a time to celebrate diversity, promote inclusion and support accessibility for all.
💙 Some days ago, we had the opportunity of presenting our platform Audiofunctions+ at CIUD 2025, the VII International Congress on University and Disability, at Granada, focused on the theme: Trends and Challenges for an Inclusive University.
💙 Audiofunctions+ offers a real support in making education accessible for visual impaired students and we are thrilled that more than 400 specialists attending the event found out about it from our implicated team member Pedro García-Sánchez.

📢 Excited to share our participation at International Conference on Technology in Mathematics Teaching, ICTMT17, in London!

🔊 We shared with our distinguished audience the new version of 'Audiofunctions' within a very interesting workshop
🔊 Through sonification techniques, participants explored how sound features like pitch, panning, and volume can represent graphs function, making math more accessible and inclusive for all learners
🔊 Many thanks to our colleague Alessandro Spagnuolo and all team members that made this happened.

Exciting news: the first results of the SonairGraph project are now online!
📈 Visit the Results section to explore key findings and insights about the State of the Art Report.

https://sonairgraph.unito.it/sites/default/files/documents/2025-09/A2.1%20Report.pdf

The report offers a comprehensive analysis of the existing literature on the application of sonification and haptic-tactile feedback in the development of assistive technologies for users with visual impairments and the teaching-learning of mathematical function graphs. A further analysis is conducted to explore the existing instruments using the sonification technology as well as other tools employing tactile interaction, since haptic exploration is funded to be the currently most implemented process in teaching-learning function graphs, despite its inherent limitations of being very expensive and static.
The report is divided in three main sections:
• Analysis of existing tools - applications and technologies used to study mathematical functions;
• Literature review of papers addressing sonification and accessibility in mathematics in the field of Human-Computer interaction;
• Literature review on the role of sonification in teaching and learning mathematics.
