Raum für urbane Experimente + studioBASAR !
In an age of increasingly planned urban habitats, a wide range of leftover spaces are still surviving, from previously planned and turned into failed spaces, to forgotten areas, bypassed, frozen, or put on hold zones. Having the quality of the possible and without planning for a clear goal, we aimed to work these gaps of possible spaces as an intermediary phase, between turn off places to community generated settings.
During five days we passed in a ‘live project’ from concept and organization, communication, design, to collecting materials from the neighborhood, production, intervention and final event. The workshop developed in two stages, having the first days reserved for presentations, discussions and walks around the neighborhood and the following days where for hands on work, production and installation. In the last day, despite the rainy wheatear and some initial pessimistic prognosis, the inhabitants joined the first ‘Herbstfest’ of Kassel Noordstad held in Friedrich Wöhler Platz. Here, kids and their parents built and finally un-built from cardboard a New-New Amsterdam on a sandy empty field or joined the ad-hoc flea market and the favorite place on site questionnaire. Involving different groups in the same time and place and raising the interaction level of the surrounding public space by leaving behind few custom made add-ons benches, the workshop has established as a base for future community actions in the area.
The event was organized by Raum für urbane Experimente and coordinated by Alex Axinte (studioBASAR) and Tudor Elian. Participants: Kilian Blum, Axel Brechenser, Anna Eckenweber, Kamila Kozak, Osman Petersen, Tanja Simonovic, Philipp Zint, Alex Koch, Pascal Simon, Anatol Rettberg, David Sbecker, Sofie Arnold, David Becker.
