Verena Landau: Painting workshop
Looking back forward.
Art - History - Transformation

The transformation of works from art history can turn them into current
artistic events. In this course, the participants will use the method of overpainting to personally interpret a printed reproduction of an old master painting to update it.

What potential does a composition of Caravaggio still have for us today? Which
socially significant items can be found in a subject by Artemisia Gentileschi? What contemporary references can we discover in a theme by Vermeer?

The aim is not to imitate the masters, but rather a process of appropriation and transformation in order to approach questions of the present.
Choose a work that you can personally identify with!
The work will give you strength and inspire you!

The focus is on curiosity about the adventure of painting.

What is needed?

1. Inspiration: Personal associations, experiences and memories can be linked to the source material from art history.

2. Nature study: To develope an idea for a painting, we create spatial situations and poses to better understand them through drawing.

3. Material: The choice of material is crucial in order to enable a process-oriented way of working: building, discarding, destroying - constantly reacting and redesigning.

4. Coincidence: We welcome coincidences and mistakes!
