The project is based in the Peshdar Plain, Iraqi Kurdistan, & uses a multidisciplinary approach to investigate the Neo-Assyrian period (c. 900-600 BC) in this area. Set in the extraordinary mountainscape of Iraqi-Kurdistan, the Peshdar Plain Project aims to uncover the ancient history of this understudied area with a focus on the 9th-7th centuries BC when the Neo-Assyrian Empire controlled the reg

ion. To this end, it brings together a wide range of international experts in history, archaeology, archaeobotany, archaeozoology, geoarchaeology, archaeometry, geophysics, photogrammetry & 3D modelling, microfossil analysis, GIS and cuneiform studies. The aim of the inaugural 2015 mission is to excavate the Neo-Assyrian site of Gird-i Bazar, partially destroyed by the construction of a chicken farm, to survey the nearby Neo-Assyrian site of Qalat-i Dinka and to increase our understanding of the land use and water management in the Peshdar Plain. This is a salvage project in an area undergoing rapid economic development in the agricultural sector and the accompanying damages to its archaeological heritage.
