Great public transportation – one reason why higher education in Germany is so affordable
More than half of Germany’s students – 56% - get to their campuses by public transportation – and only one quarter use cars, states the country’s highly respected Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, citing a study conducted by the Centrum für Hochschulentwicklung.
The use of public transportation is highest – more than 80% - in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and other major cities.
This use has been rising steadily over the past decade. The reason for this growing popularity: the high and improving quality of public transportation, which students ranked as offered the greatest speed and convenience of commuting.
The remaining quarter of students still driving to school are generally found in rural areas, in which commutes are long and public transportation tends to be sketchy.
