How can public spaces respond quickly to increasing summer heat? In their master’s thesis SOS_URBAN HEAT, Julia Roemer and Darleen Schäfer investigate the potential of temporary interventions for mitigating heat in public space.
At the Chair of Landscape Architecture and Public Space TUM Department of Architecture TUM School of Engineering and Design (ED) , the two students examined more than 100 international projects to explore how reversible and adaptable interventions can provide short-term thermal relief and under which spatial and organisational conditions they can be implemented.
The research resulted in a comprehensive publication, a digital project database and the SOS Guide, which translates the findings into a practical planning process for temporary heat mitigation measures.
This summer, SOS_URBAN HEAT was presented at Pavillon 333 in Munich, bringing together the research, project examples and recommendations in an exhibition format. The digital project database and SOS Guide are available online at sosurbanheat.lovable.app.
