The Department of Architecture at the Technical University of Munich has 1.500 students and 200 members of academic staff working in 31 professorships, and takes a research-oriented approach to teaching also in cooperation with businesses and public institutions - embedded in the vibrant living and research environment of the Greater Munich Area. The department, which was founded in 1868, is the o

nly university-level educational institution in Bavaria to teach architecture and is embedded in one of the best universities in Europe. Its inner-city location in the artistic quarter of Munich is ideal for a school of architecture. The department belongs to one of the top universities in Europe. How can public spaces respond quickly to increasing summer heat? In their master’s thesis SOS_URBAN HEAT, Julia Roemer and Darleen Schäfer investigate the potential of temporary interventions for mitigating heat in public space.

At the Chair of Landscape Architecture and Public Space TUM Department of Architecture TUM School of Engineering and Design (ED) , the two students examined more than 100 international projects to explore how reversible and adaptable interventions can provide short-term thermal relief and under which spatial and organisational conditions they can be implemented.

The research resulted in a comprehensive publication, a digital project database and the SOS Guide, which translates the findings into a practical planning process for temporary heat mitigation measures.

This summer, SOS_URBAN HEAT was presented at Pavillon 333 in Munich, bringing together the research, project examples and recommendations in an exhibition format. The digital project database and SOS Guide are available online at sosurbanheat.lovable.app.

Congratulations to our students Finn-Matti Hirtz, Zeno Blaas, and Jan Ludwig! Their project „Dunkle Schale, Heller Kern“ has been selected as one of three winning entries of the 6th proHolz Student Trophy 2026 .at .

The design adds a three-story timber extension to an existing office and medical building at Candidplatz in Munich, demonstrating the potential of urban densification through timber construction. New residential spaces are organized around naturally lit and ventilated atria, while public ground-floor uses and landscaped outdoor areas strengthen the connection to the neighborhood.

The jury praised the project’s clear conceptual approach, spatial quality, and sensitive integration with the existing building. It also highlighted the well-considered fire safety strategy and the efficient organization of compact living units.

Developed as part of the master’s project „Candidplatz – Timber on Top“, it was supervised by the Chair of Architecture and Timber Construction and the Chair of Timber Structures and Building Construction at the TUM School of Engineering and Design .

This year’s proHolz Student Trophy focused on Timber on Top – Vertical Extensions in Urban Contexts at sites in Vienna, Munich, and Ljubljana. A total of 119 teams from eight countries participated. The award ceremony took place on 21 May 2026 at TU Wien.
