🎓 Alumni Spotlight #11 – Julius Kortenbruck
This week, we’re catching up with a former UPBracing team member who took his skills from the workshop to the global stage — now working for Doctors Without Borders! 🌍💙
📍 Current Role:
After a career change, Julius now works as a Technical Manager for Ärzte ohne Grenzen e.V. (Doctors Without Borders) on international assignments. He is responsible for all aspects of technical infrastructure at project sites — from vehicle fleets and IT systems to buildings and security.
🛠️ How Formula Student helped:
„My time on the team showed me how rewarding it is to work in a fast-paced environment with broad responsibility, short decision-making paths, and directly tangible results. I searched for that in the automotive industry for a long time but never found it — which ultimately led me to change fields.“
💡 A moment where UPBracing made the difference:
„My application to Doctors Without Borders would not have been successful without my time in Formula Student. The experience gained in small, highly effective teams with fast decision-making and high stress levels transferred perfectly. Once you survive a season or two in Formula Student, you know what you’re made of.“
🏆 Most memorable moment:
„In 2014 at Silverstone, we failed the brake test due to flaws in the brake disc design. While still on the drive back, in the back of the van, the team designed a new brake disc, contacted suppliers, and kicked off production. It felt like the new discs arrived in Paderborn faster than we did. Brilliant.“
💬 Advice for today’s members:
„Relationships matter more than grades when it comes to your career. Almost all entry paths into large corporations happen through internships and thesis projects — and these are often assigned informally to people you know. So make sure you spend enough time in the workshop and not just at your desk.“
From the UPBracing workshop to international humanitarian missions — Julius‘ journey shows that the skills you learn in Formula Student can take you anywhere. 🏁
