"Sometimes it's better to practice more than you need in the end," clarinettist Charles Neidich tells a course participant. The two also work on their appearance together: "You have to be a diva, a great opera star, you're the soloist!" Neidich repeats. He doesn't want to dwell on the small details of a note: "The most important thing is that it should sound good!". Nora Czere came to the Master Class from Hungary on the recommendation of her teacher. Her teacher himself had lessons with Neidich and strongly recommended him to her. The clarinettist is happy about the chance and about the nice togetherness of the participants, "Today we all had breakfast together". [Photos: Thomas Müller]
Concert with Charles Neidich and his participants: Thursday, July 27, 7:30 p.m., Festsaal Fürstenhaus

"Don't get louder, just use more bows," advises Lukas Hagen to the students of the "Kaewon Ma Quartet" from Leipzig. The four young women from South Korea have only been playing together in their current line-up for two weeks, and the professor is impressed by the level they have reached as an ensemble so quickly. The musicians decided on the master class with Lukas Hagen because they are particularly interested in the music of Maurice Ravel - for whose interpretation the "Hagen Quartet" is particularly well known. The four leave the rehearsal room in a great mood, they are on their way to the Ilmpark: "It's so beautiful here! A place to breathe." [Photos: Thomas Müller]

A professor from our own ranks is also teaching at the Weimar Master Classes: the horn player Jörg Brückner! The places for his course were quickly booked up, Lilith Balbier from Zurich got hold of one. She especially enjoys the fact that Brückner plays so much himself during the lessons, so she takes away a lot technically and musically. While she is still preparing for her next lesson, Brückner tells another participant: "If you have time, read the biography of the composer whose piece you are playing. [Photo: Maik Schuck]

"Trust your violin!" advises Tanja Becker-Bender in her Master Class, "play it the way you feel it". Opposite her is Adelina Singer. The young violinist is a student at the Music High School Schloss Belvedere Weimar. She took a lot away from the Master Class, she says. Becker-Bender's explanations of Bach's baroque music in particular are something she wants to remember: "No one has ever explained to me so well that the music is written out in Bach's notes, all the ornaments are already there." Aaron Schroeer is sitting across from Wen-Sinn Yang, concentrating, because he wants to take as much as possible with him for next Saturday: He is part of the orchestra studio. That means he gets to play as a soloist with orchestra as part of the Weimar Master Classes. "Practice for power" is what visiting professor Yang gives him that day, "not brutal, but the notes have to be long enough". Schörer likes the atmosphere at the Weimar Master Class. As he says, it's about working together on cello playing and trying out new things without vanity and shyness, but with all the more enthusiasm for risk.

The course concert will take place on Saturday, 22 July, at 4 pm in the Forum Seebach. "The Best at the End" will play on Saturday, 29 July at 7:30 pm in the Weimarhalle. [Photos: Maik Schuck]

Two concerts of the Weimar Master Classes worth listening to will take place at the Schießhaus today and tomorrow. You are cordially invited!

On Saturday it's "May I have the pleasure: Everything Waltz?!". The world-famous violinist and guest professor Lukas Hagen will devote an entire evening to the three-four time signature under this motto. Starting at 7:30 p.m., Hagen, primarius of the Hagen Quartet, will play waltzes, ländler and Linz dances by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert and Johann Strauß, among others, together with Sara Mayer (violin), Werner Neugebauer (violin/viola) and Josef Radauer (double bass).

On Friday, the best participants of the courses of Tanja Becker-Bender, Wen-Sinn Yang, Jörg Brückner and Robert D. Levin will play in the Schießhaus from 7:30 pm. This evening you can experience a varied programme of violin, violoncello, horn and piano. You can look forward to a mixture of timbres, virtuosity and chamber music interplay. The focus will be on solo and duo works from the course repertoire. [Photos: Lukas Hagen, Lukas Beck | Schießhaus, Thomas Müller]

This year's Master Class by Konstantin Scherbakov comes to an end today. "If you don't have fun playing, no one will understand this piece," he told the participant Nicole Kiełbasiewicz from Poland. She is studying with Scherbakov, but wanted to take as many lessons as possible from the professor shortly before she graduates. This is her first time in Weimar, and when she picked up a key from the key board to her overroom downstairs in the Fürstenhaus, she first felt like she was in another world, she says. "A bit old-fashioned, but with a lot of charm," she laughs later.

Anyone who is curious about the playing of the participants in the course has the opportunity to listen to the course concert in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus tonight, Thursday at 7:30 pm. [Photos: Maik Schuck]

The numerous visitors to the Festsaal Fürstenhaus yesterday heard a concert by the horn player Jörg Brückner. Together with Cora Irsen at the piano, he played a programme with works by Yehezkel Braun, York Bowen, Yitzhak Yedid and others. The concert of the Weimar professor was the third in the series "Master in Concert" of this year's Master Classes. "Pay attention! A certain rigour is called for!" says Robert D. Levin when a pianist from his course starts the next part of her piece. Again and again he directs general help to the eager listeners: "Here we have an artificial difficulty, you imagine that this is difficult and then it will be." Tzu-Chien Lin from Taiwan has already had her first two lessons with Levin. She feels inspired by the pianist, she says, and has already learned a lot. Interested guest students can experience Levin during his courses until 22 July. Tomorrow, Wednesday, he himself will play a Mozart evening in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus at 7:30 pm.

The concert programme of the Weimar Master Classes is in full swing. Yesterday, violinist Tanja Becker-Bender and cellist Wen-Sinn Yang performed together on the stage of the Festsaal Fürstenhaus. The guest professors were accompanied on the piano by Tatiana Chernichka and Alexei Petrov. The visitors heard works by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Zoltan Kodály and Johannes Brahms.

Tonight, instead of a concert, the first music film of this year's Master Classes is on the programme: at 7:30 pm in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus, "As in Heaven" will be shown, a film about a world-famous conductor who collapses on the open stage. Reluctantly, he decides to give up his dream job and return to his Swedish home village. One thing leads to another and he begins to conduct an amateur church choir, where he meets Lena...
