Bacteria: from moldy wheat responsive to antibiotic resistant.

"When I woke up just after dawn on September 28, 1928, I certainly didn't plan to revolutionize all medicine by discovering the world's first antibiotic, or bacteria killer. But I guess that was exactly what I did" -Fleming later wrote.

Alexander Fleming was returning from vacation when he started cleaning up his messy lab, noticed that some petri dishes containing Staphylococcus bacteria had been contaminated with a mold, Penicillium notatum, which was inhibiting the growth of the bacteria.
Fleming researched the juice produced by the mold and determined that it killed many types of bacteria. This was recorded as the first modern antibiotic which was later purified and made ready for testing. But what Fleming didn't know that ancient Egyptians used moldy bread to prevent infection centuries before his discovery.
In addition to using date wine, honey and beer, ancient Egyptians applied crusts of moldy wheaten bread on pustular scalp infections.
These remedies were believed to influence the spirits or the gods responsible for illness and suffering.

The Edwin Smith Papyrus is one of the oldest surviving texts of medical literature (medical papyri). It was purchased by Edwin Smith in 1862 in Luxor, Egypt.

Whereas the source of the Edwin Smith Papyrus is known, Mustafa Agha, it is unclear from whom Sir Smith purchased the Ebers Papyrus.

It has been claimed to have been discovered between the legs of a mummy in the Assassif district of the Theban necropolis(Demand 2000).

It is much longer than other extant medical papyri from ancient Egypt. In 1872, the papyrus was purchased by the German Egyptologist and novelist Georg Ebers (born in Berlin, 1837), after whom it is named.

However, it was not translated until 1890 in German. English translations were done in the twentieth century.

Stay tuned for more details on our theme coming your way very soon!

Can you imagine an illness that is not curable nor diagnosable during life?

Well, meet CTE.

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a degenerative brain disease found in athletes, military veterans, and others with a history of repetitive brain trauma.

Currently, CTE can only be diagnosed after death through brain tissue analysis.

Treating a disease that can't be officially diagnosed until after death is difficult. Luckily there are lots of things that patients worried they have CTE can do to address their symptoms and find relief.

Did you know that...

Not all research findings are reliable?

Within the field of research, reliability is consistency. Being able to reproduce the same results that a study produced using the same construct means that those results are accurate. If they re not accurate, then they are not valid.

Sadly, a project titled "The Reproducibility Project: Psychology," conducted by the Open Science Collaboration, attempted to replicate the findings of 100 published experimental and correlationao psychological studies.

The results? Only 36.1% of those studies replicated. Those findings point toward a systemic problec affecting all science, and that there is ample room for improvement.
