Driven by a deep desire to support others from a young age, Farida Elrefaie’s journey led her to study psychology and anthropology, where she explored how systems and social structures shape people’s lives and well being.

As global events unfolded, particularly the genocide in Gaza in 2023, Farida’s perspective on justice and humanity became even more profound, reinforcing her commitment to creating meaningful change and questioning the systems that shape people’s lives.

Today, Farida continues her journey in the development field questioning systems while working to change them.

On May 6, the Gerhart Center brought together changemakers, practitioners, and social impact leaders for an engaging discussion on what it truly takes to create meaningful social impact.

The event opened with an insightful presentation by Professor
Ali Awni, Director of the Gerhart Center, on “Patterns of Failure in Achieving Social Impact”, highlighting common challenges organizations face in their efforts to create sustainable change.

The presentation was followed by a discussion with social impact experts, who shared practical reflections, lessons learned, and valuable perspectives from the field, offering deeper insights into how organizations can navigate challenges and strengthen their impact.
