The Fifth Workshop on metabolic diseases, titled "Kick off -New IEM management centres", took place on 14th and 15th April, 2015 at the Hotel "Holiday-inn" City stars, Cairo.

Genetics professionals from different governorates all over Egypt have discussed about the current followed treatment plans as well as each center’s status co and plan of activation.

The program of the two-days workshop comprised of presentations given by junior and senior scientists, and several keynote speakers. Speakers from Ain Shams genetics unit were Dr. Osama Zaki, Dr. Heba Salah and Dr Nada Hammad with a valuable contribution from eminent guests from MOH especially Dr Mona Hafez the head of National Newborn Screening program for PKU.

The main topics of the workshop were:
• Nation wide metabolic centers objectives and activation plan time frame
• System of operations in between the centers and ways of coordination
• How to suspect in born error metabolic patient
• Diagnosis of PKU
• Management of PKU
• New born screening
• Atypical PKU
• Computerized communication between centers

In addition to the plenary sessions, numerous discussions and informal meetings have lead to a fruitful scientific exchange including plans of patient education and nutrition advisory role .The interaction between young and experienced scientists has been an important element. Altogether, the workshop with 25 participants was a complete success.

The workshop was organized by Nutricia Metabolics.

Gabriela was born with Down Syndrome and Fabio struggles with slight mental delay. Their daughter Valentina was born with no problems at all and they have wonderful support from everyone. Beautiful family!
