Title:
Compressed Sensing Algorithms for Wideband Spectrum Sensing in Cognitive Radio Networks

Abstract:

Wideband spectrum sensing is one of the most challenging components of cognitive radio networks applications. It should be performed as fast and accurately as possible. Traditional wideband spectrum sensing techniques suffer from the requirement for excessively high sampling rate analog-to-digital converters. It was proposed that compressed sensing may enable wideband spectrum sensing at a much lower sampling rate than that dictated by the Nyquist theorem. However, its reconstruction complexity and speed remained a barrier for such an application.

In this thesis, we introduce Adaptive Reduced-set Matching Pursuit (ARMP) and Fast Matching Pursuit (FMP), fast and accurate greedy recovery algorithms for compressed sensing. We employ FMP to wideband spectrum sensing for cognitive radio networks. We show that the spectral data are sparse in the Haar wavelet and wavelet packet domains. We incorporate this fact with the proposed FMP algorithm to introduce a fast and accurate spectrum sensing technique, which is suitable for application in CRN.

Our proposed technique is capable of reconstructing spectrum signals from samples at a rate of about 25% of the Nyquist rate, significantly faster than other related algorithms, at more than 99% probability of detection and less than1% probability of false alarm.

Dr. Walid Magdy (http://homepages.inf.ed.ac.uk/wmagdy/) is giving a workshop on possible directions to build a career in data science. The first two lectures give examples on domains of research in data science, namely: information retrieval and computational social science. The third lecture explores the possible career paths after graduation, where it includes some advices for those interested in different career paths, such as working in industry, working in research and academia (including graduate studies), and those who are interested in running their own business.
This workshop consists of three lectures:
1. Information Retrieval: Search is not only the Web
2. Computational Social Science: What can we learn from big Social data?
3. What should I do after graduation?

Abstract:

In the past decade, Deep Learning made huge leaps forward in many standard AI areas, and created many new research fronts. In this talk, I will cover basic background for Deep Learning, then summarize major research trends in big industrial research labs. At the end, I will talk about open research questions, and how researchers and engineers in Egypt can be part of these new trends.

Bio:

Dr. Abdel-rahman Mohamed is a Researcher at Microsoft Research. He received his PhD from the University of Toronto working with Geoffrey Hinton, the Godfather of Deep Learning. His interests include Deep Learning and Spoken Language Technologies. With researchers in The University of Toronto, he initiated the comeback of Neural Networks for acoustic models in 2009 as the very first large scale success of Deep Learning at industrial scale, and since then he worked on developing many Neural Network models for pushing the ASR accuracy even further. His work from 2014 on using Convolutional Neural Networks for acoustic modeling received the 2016 IEEE Signal Processing Society best paper award.
