Kafrelsheikh University won first place among the top 10 universities with their Hermitia project, as the project mainly treats organic waste in a healthy and safe way to produce high-value protein in economical ways to confront the high prices of feed ingredients.
For his part, Dr. Mohamed Al-Al, Vice President of the University for Education and Student Affairs, congratulated the university team for obtaining first place in the world, and explained that the Hermitia Project extracts protein from the black soldier insect, which feeds on food waste, and thus solves two problems at the same time, which is the problem of food waste. The problem of feed is by using the source of animal protein extracted from the black soldier insect. They make fish feed, poultry feed, livestock feed, and ornamental fish feed. Also, in order to achieve an integrated project and exploit all parts of the insect, the students made chitosan from the remains of the insect’s scales. The students also created the first water purifier that can be used in open fish farms and achieve high efficiency for these farms.
It is worth noting that the Kafrelsheikh University team won first place in Egypt, first place in the Orange Company for Entrepreneurship Competition, first place in the Cairo Bank Triple Bottom Line Competition, second place in the Egyptian Development and Export Bank Competition for Export, and second place in the Jehaina Sustainability Company Competition.
