ICN2 presents latest biosensor advances at 2D-BioPAD consortium meeting
Researchers from the Nanobioelectronics and Biosensors Group at ICN2 attended the 6th consortium meeting of the Horizon Europe project 2D-BioPAD, held on 3–4 March 2026 in Mannheim, Germany. The meeting brought together project partners both in person and online to review recent progress and coordinate the next phase of the project. The event was hosted at the Central Institute of Mental Health (ZI).
ICN2 was represented by Arben Merkoçi, Ruslan Álvarez, Marianna Rossetti and Danilo Echeverri. During the meeting, Marianna Rossetti and Danilo Echeverri presented the latest advances achieved by the ICN2 team, contributing to the development of graphene-based materials and biosensor technologies within the project.
Consortium partners reported progress achieved during the fifth project semester (October 2025 – March 2026), including developments in aptamer selection for Alzheimer’s disease biomarkers, magnetic nanoparticles, graphene materials, and biosensing platforms. Updates were also presented on the development of both electrochemical and graphene field-effect transistor (GFET) biosensors, which will be integrated into the 2D-BioPAD diagnostic device.
Further discussions focused on the integration of biosensors into the system architecture, as well as preparations for retrospective and prospective clinical pilot studies using real plasma samples. Ethical approvals for the retrospective study have already been obtained, and partners are currently coordinating sample benchmarking and shipment procedures.
The meeting also addressed communication, dissemination and exploitation activities, including collaboration with other research initiatives and the planning of future workshops and policy engagement.
Over the coming months, the consortium will focus on finalising key deliverables, testing biosensors with plasma samples, and advancing preparations for clinical validation. The next consortium meeting is scheduled for November 2026 in Kuopio, Finland, where partners will review progress and prepare for the project’s second review.
