RADDEL ("Nanocapsules for Targeted Delivery of Radioactivity") is an Initial Training Network (ITN) funded by the Marie Curie Actions under the FP7 People Program RADDEL focuses on the design, synthesis, characterization, pharmacological studies and dosimetry calculations of nanocapsules that contain in their interior radioactive materials for biomedical applications in the areas of cancer diagnos

is and therapy. A well structured training program will be also provided with a balanced combination of local and network-wide training through secondments, joint network meetings, workshops, schools, industrial training and the final network conference. The research program focuses on the design, synthesis, characterisation, pharmacological studies and dosimetry calculations of nanocapsules that contain in their interior radioactive materials for biomedical applications in the areas of cancer diagnosis and therapy. After sealing the chosen radionuclides, the external walls of the nanocapsules will be decorated with biomolecules to render them biocompatible and for targeting purposes.

A workshop on Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) characterisation will be held on the 19th of January at ICMAB-CSIC. This workshop, aimed at providing an overview of novel advanced methods for the nanoscale characterization of materials functionalities in diverse fields (biology, materials science, soft condensed matter), is part of the RADDEL training programme and open to any fellow with interest in attending. Special emphasis will be placed in presenting a didactic content for those non-experts in AFM methods which are however curious in learning how AFM can contribute to their research. On-site demonstration of AFM advanced capabilities will take place with a Cypher System from Asylum Research.

Happy new year to everyone! We hope you had a great Christmas time and best wishes for 2015.

We start 2015 with a programme full of activities for the fellows!!!!

Next week the 5th RADDEL network meeting will take place at the University of Oxford (UK); with the network meeting being held on Tuesday 13h afternoon. A social dinner for all partners will be offered by local organisers on the same evening. On Wednesday 14th, scientists-in-charge will attend a Supervisory Board session while all recruited fellows will be trained in Complementary Training skills through the Workshop "A Practical Guide on EU Funding: the Basics of Horizon 2020". The same afternoon, the 2nd Workshop on "Developing and Marketing of Radiopharmaceuticals" will be delivered by industrial partner IBA. Finally, on 15-16th January, 5 RADDEL fellows will attend the second and final Hands-on-school in "Pharmacology Applied to Nanomaterials" organised by King's College London.

In the last few months several secondments have taken place in the frame of the network, with fellows traveling to other partner institutions for periods of several weeks in order to work on different research environments and be able to improve their research skills. So far, 13 secondments have taken place in the frame of RADDEL, with many more planned before the end of the project. This is a crucial activity within the training programme and all the partners are encouraged to send their fellows to different partner institutions so they can improve their research skills and enhance the prospects for a future successful career in research.
