Achucarro Basque Center for Neuroscience Achucarro Basque Center for Neuroscience, named in the memory of Nicolas Achucarro Lund (Bilbao, 1880-1918)

Ikerbasque – the Basque Foundation for Science and the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), fostered the creation of the Basque center for neuroscience research, named in the memory of Nicolas Achucarro (Bilbao, 1880-1918), a pioneer of modern brain research. The main strategic objective of Achucarro is to contribute to the development of a socially and economically sustainable Society. To

do this we strive to perform world-class research in the study of neuron-glia biology in the normal and pathological brain. This research focus will allow us to contribute to the training of future generations of neuroscientists and be an active partner in the dissemination of the human knowledge about the brain.

Last Friday, June 5, we welcomed Raymundo Báez Mendoza (Georg August Universität, Göttingen, Germany) to Achucarro for a seminar on the neuronal mechanisms underlying social behavior and Theory of Mind. 🧠

In his talk, “Exploring Social Cognition: Prefrontal Mechanisms for Group Behavior and Theory of Mind”, he presented research exploring the neuronal mechanisms underlying social interactions and Theory of Mind through a series of studies in macaques and humans.

This work shows that the prefrontal cortex contains rich representations of social dynamics across species. In macaques, neuronal activity reflected information about social decisions and reward recipients, while in humans, individual neurons encoded information about others’ beliefs during a false-belief task.

The research also highlights how a multi-species approach can help uncover the neuronal mechanisms of social cognition, including the first description of individual neurons in the human prefrontal cortex encoding key aspects of Theory of Mind.

Thank you to Raymundo Báez Mendoza for the visit and for sharing these insights with our community. 👏

Last Friday at Achucarro, we hosted a Soft-skills Seminar focused on an essential topic for today’s scientific community: effective communication. 🎙️🧠

We were delighted to welcome Clara García Gorro from CIC biomaGUNE for an inspiring session on Media Training for Scientists and Researchers.

Drawing from her experience in neuroscience and science communication through her YouTube channel Cerebrotes, Clara shared practical tips and strategies to help researchers communicate their work with greater confidence across different media formats, including radio, podcasts, TV, and print media.

A big thank you to Clara for this enriching session and for sharing her expertise with our community!

Bridging Neuroscience, Art, and Patient Recovery 🎨🧠

How do we help chronic pain patients transition from illness back into society? The answer lies at the intersection of neuroscience, art, and collaboration.

On May 14th, we had the pleasure of welcoming a group of women participating in the Min ARTEAN project to Achucarro. Hosted by our Ramon y Cajal PI, Dr. Izaskun Buendia Abaitua, and Jaime Sagarduy Barrena, the visit highlighted a powerful alignment of values:

◼️ 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝘆: Using dance, music, and movement to drive neurobiological recovery in fibromyalgia and migraine patients.
◼️ 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆: Addressing the social determinants of gender in chronic health (backed by research in the European Journal of Pain).
◼️ 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆: Empowering patients through science communication, like the documentary “El dolor se aprende”.

Thank you to the Min ARTEAN team for proving that advancing science requires building meaningful alliances across sectors! 🤝

Last Friday, May 8, we welcomed Ugo Mayor (Director of Social Impact at EHU and Ikerbasque Research Professor) to Achucarro for a 𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿 on the vital connection between scientific research and societal needs. 🔬

In his talk, “Linking research to societal needs: planning for impact and how to document it”, he 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 key strategies for researchers to move beyond academic excellence and ensure their work generates tangible social, economic, and scientific impact.

The session 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀 the importance of planning for impact from the earliest stages of a project, emphasizing that while impact often occurs on different time scales, a level of traceability is essential to document how research contributes to society.

Professor Mayor also 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 the need for institutional repositories and tools to monitor these contributions, arguing that without proper documentation, we fail to apply the "scientific method" to the very impact we claim to achieve.

Thank you to Ugo Mayor for the visit and for sharing these insights with our community. 👏
