El Departamento de Ingenierías Química y Biomolecular de la Universidad de Cantabria está formado por más de 60 profesores e investigadores. DOCENCIA
Imparte docencia a nivel de grado en 6 titulaciones: Grado en Ingeniería de los Recursos Energéticos, Grado en Ingeniería de los Recursos Mineros, Grado en Ingeniería en Tecnologías Industriales, Grado en Ingeniería Mecánica, Grado en Ingeniería Quím

ica y Grado en Ciencias Biomédicas, y a nivel de posgrado en 3 Máster Universitarios: Master en Ingeniería Química, Máster en Ingeniería de Minas y Máster en Ingeniería Industrial y el Programa de Doctorado en Ingeniería Química, de la Energía y de Procesos. INVESTIGACIÓN
El objetivo es desarrollar investigación para avanzar en la sostenibilidad e innovación de los procesos productivos, energéticos y medioambientales. Dentro del Departamento existen 4 grupos de investigación:
1) Desarrollo de Procesos Químicos y Control de Contaminantes (DEPRO), liderado por el profesor Ángel Irabien.
2) Procesos Avanzados de Separación (PAS), liderado por la profesora Inmaculada Ortiz.
3) Tecnologías Ambientales y Bioprocesos (TAB), liderado por la profesora Ane Urtiaga.
4) Ingeniería de Procesos Sostenibles (IPS), liderado por la profesora Raquel Ibañez.

II UC Solutions Awards

The University of Cantabria (UC) has presented the second edition of UC Solutions Awards, organized by the the Office of Vice-Rector for Research, Transfer and Doctorate.. The event took place on June 17th, 2026, and was chaired by the rector, Conchi López, and brought together a large group of researchers awarded.

- Dr. Guillermo Díaz, member of DePro research group, was awarded in the category “Industry 4.0” by the project entitled “Smart CO2 Capture and Conversion for Industry (CCI-CO2)”

- Dr. Lucía Gómez, member of PAS research group, has been awarded in the category “Blue Economy” by the project entitled “Recovery of Blue Energy from Marine Salt Gradients by Reverse Electrodialysis (BLUE-RED)”

The objective of UC Solutions Awards is to stimulate the transfer of knowledge to industry and promote that research responds to the real technological challenges of the productive sector.

Scientific Paper

The scientific work “Continuous electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 to ethanol with high selectivity using advanced MOF-based electrodes” developed by José Antonio Abarca, Andrea Domingo, Ángel Irabien, and Guillermo Díaz, carried out in collaboration with researchers of Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia, University Rovira i Virgili, and University of Lisbon (Portugal), has been recently published in the scientific journal Separation and Purification Technology.

CAPTUS Project Meeting

Prof. Ángel Irabien, Dr. Guillermo Díaz Sainz, and Dr. Aitor Marcos Madrazo recently participated in the General Assembly Meeting of the Demonstrating Energy-Intensive Industry-Integrated Solutions to Produce Liquid Renewable Energy Carriers from Captured Carbon Emissions (CAPTUS) project, held virtually on 9th June, 2026. Funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme, CAPTUS aims to develop and demonstrate innovative solutions for integrating energy-intensive industries with technologies that convert captured carbon emissions into liquid renewable energy carriers. The project brings together a consortium of 18 partners from eight countries, fostering international collaboration to advance the transition towards sustainable energy systems.

Congress: WSSG 2026

On 5–6 June, 2026, PhD student Sandra Ceballos Santos participated in the World Symposium on Sustainability Governance (WSSG 2026). Hosted by the University of Salamanca in partnership with the Research and Transfer Center Sustainable Development and Climate Change Management (FTZ-NK) at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, and in cooperation with the European School of Sustainability Science and Research, the symposium brought together participants from 27 countries to discuss advances, challenges, and prospects of sustainability governance in an increasingly complex and uncertain world.

Sandra delivered the oral presentation “Governing Sustainability Certification under Climate Uncertainty: Monitoring, Incentives and Institutional Credibility”, developed within the SMART-FOODPRINT project.

Congress: MeCCE 2026

The 16th Mediterranean Congress in Chemical Engineering (MeCCE 2026) was held from June 2 to June 5, 2026, in Barcelona (Spain), as parto of EXPOQUIMIA, the International Chemistry Event and Process Industries. Under the theme “Transforming the Industry, Shaping the Future” this edition explored the evolving role of chemical engineering in addressing critical global challenges.

Several members of the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department attended the MeCCE 2026. Dr. Jose Antonio Abarca, PhD student Emilia Laura Fouquet, and PhD student Beheshta Dawood presented different contributions during the congress. Prof. Ángel Irabien chaired a round table discussion “Role of Chemical Engineering in advancing circularity, climate neutrality and competitiveness in the process industries”. Prof. Raquel Ibañez was part of the scientific committee.

III Meeting on Circular Economy UC

During the III Meeting on Circular Economy at the University of Cantabria held on June 3th, 2026, an event that is part of the MARE UC chair, several awards were presented.

The III MARE Awards for the Best Doctoral Thesis on Circular Economy were to two theses developed in the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department:
- José Antonio Abarca “From Electrode Fabrication to CO2 Electrolyzer Design” Supervisors: Guillermo Díaz / Ángel Irabien.
- Cristina Campos “Development of a Tool to Assess the Environmental Performance of Tourist Destinations – Sustainable Tourism Actions under a life Cycle Thinking Approach” Supervisors: María Margallo / Rubén Aldaco.

Finally, as for the MARE Awards on Circular Economy in the modality of TFM, Marta Diaz and Mario Coz were distinguished.
