🌍 Earth Day: three things you might not know about the day dedicated to our planet

Every year on 22 April, millions of people around the world celebrate Earth Day. But behind this global event there are some interesting facts that are often overlooked.

🌱 It started thanks to a student movement.
The first Earth Day was organised in 1970 in the United States and mobilised around 20 million people, making it one of the largest environmental demonstrations in history.

🌎 Today it is a truly global event.
More than 190 countries take part in Earth Day initiatives, from environmental education activities to community actions aimed at protecting ecosystems.

📚 It helped shape modern environmental awareness.
Earth Day played a major role in bringing environmental issues into public debate and policy discussions, influencing how societies think about sustainability and the protection of natural resources.

Moments like Earth Day remind us that environmental awareness is not only about the future — it is also about understanding how our relationship with the planet has evolved over time.

💬 Did you already know the story behind Earth Day?

🌊 The oceans are warming — and scientists are paying close attention.

Recent observations show that global sea surface temperatures are approaching record levels for the time of year.

Why does this matter?

The oceans play a crucial role in the Earth's climate system. They absorb vast amounts of heat and help regulate global temperatures.

When sea surface temperatures rise, they can influence:

🌍 weather patterns
🌧 rainfall distribution
🌡 heatwaves and extreme events
🐠 marine ecosystems

Understanding these changes requires not only modern satellite data, but also long-term climate perspectives.

Projects like CHANGES explore how environmental shifts have influenced ecosystems and societies over centuries — helping scientists place today's observations within a broader historical context.

💬 Did you know that the ocean absorbs most of the excess heat trapped by greenhouse gases?
