💦 Our Master’s students in Sustainable Water Management and Governance in Natural and Agricultural Environments in action!

This week, our students visited the weir on the River Ebro and the Urdán weir on the River Gállego, which dates back to the 12th century, in Zaragoza, Spain.

These field visits offer a valuable opportunity to explore how hydraulic infrastructure works in practice, and understand its role in river ecosystem functioning and its ecosystem services.

A big thank you to Didac Jordà Capdevila, from ENGISIC, for leading these educational visits 🙏

The advanced course “Reducing methane emissions in ruminants through nutrition: measuring, management and accounting options” has come to an end in Granada, Spain.

Over three intensive days, participants explored the biological basis of enteric methane emissions, different measurement techniques, and nutritional strategies to mitigate them, from feed composition and feeding practices to innovative feed additives.

The programme also covered regulatory frameworks, modelling tools and emissions accounting, with practical sessions and examples illustrating how mitigation strategies can be assessed at farm, regional and national levels.

By bringing together scientific knowledge, hands-on learning and strategic perspectives, the course highlighted the importance of connecting effective mitigation measures with real-world livestock production systems, supporting informed decisions towards more sustainable livestock farming.

Thank you to all the lecturers and participants for sharing their expertise and insights into practical solutions for methane mitigation in livestock production.

The course was organised by CIHEAM Zaragoza, the EU-funded Re-Livestock project, CSIC, the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA) and the Global Methane Hub (GMH).

🎓 𝐀 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐂𝐈𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐌 𝐙𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐨𝐳𝐚!

Yesterday, we have officially opened the 2026/27 academic year, welcoming our new cohort and our returning second-year Master’s students.

Our inaugural lecture was delivered by Jesús Antón (OECD - OCDE), who made the case for rethinking how public policy can transform our food systems: “We need to look beyond traditional sectoral policy, put innovation at the centre and steer it, across all stakeholders, towards sustainable productivity.”

The Ramón Esteruelas–CIHEAM Zaragoza Prize was awarded to Seifelden Metwally, a graduate of our International Master in Plant Genetics, Genomics and Breeding. Congratulations!

We also paid tribute to Miguel Ángel Riesgo, Counsellor for Agriculture of the Spanish Embassy in France and Delegate of Spain to the CIHEAM, for his continued commitment to the institution.

🌍 This academic year begins with 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝟏𝟐𝟎 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝟐𝟗 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬.

To everyone beginning or continuing their journey with us: welcome, and let’s make this year count!

📍 This week, we’re in Granada, Spain, for an advanced course on reducing methane emissions in ruminants through nutrition.

Bringing together science, practical solutions and strategic decision-making, the course explores how feeding strategies, measurement technologies and modelling tools can help reduce emissions and support more sustainable livestock production.

Organised by CIHEAM Zaragoza, the Re-Livestock project, CSIC, the Global Research Alliance (GRA) and the Global Methane Hub (GMH), this advanced training brings together policy advisors, public decision-makers, private sector executives, academics and extensionists.

Three intensive days of learning, exchange and collaboration! 🐄🌍

CIHEAM Zaragoza participated in the seminar “Resilience of Mediterranean Agriculture in the Face of Water Stress: Desalination and Technological Innovations”, jointly organised by the Université Euro-Méditerranéenne de Fès, the Hassan II Academy of Science and Technology, Groupe Interacadémique pour le Développement and . The event took place in Fez, Morocco, on 21–22 October 2026, bringing together numerous experts in desalination, energy and food production, with a particular focus on the situation in Morocco.

During the seminar, CIHEAM Zaragoza Director Raúl Compés López moderated a panel discussion on the challenges associated with the use of desalinated water, particularly in agriculture. The panel featured Patrick Caron (President of Agropolis, Montpellier), Francisco Pedrero (CEBAS-CSIC, Murcia) and Jean-Éric Aubert (President of the International University of the Sea and the 2100 Foundation).

In an additional session chaired by Professor Mostapha Bousmina, President of the Euro-Mediterranean University of Fez, the institutions involved explored the many opportunities for collaboration, particularly in student mobility and participation in cooperation and innovation projects.

🇵🇹 Preparing a proposal for the 2027 Horizon Europe calls from Portugal?

On 20 November, a hands-on workshop on the Multi-Actor Approach (MAA) will take place in Lisbon. It is organised by the PREMIERE project, in which CIHEAM Zaragoza takes part, together with ANI | Agência Nacional de Inovação, Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA University of Lisbon) and TERRA Associate Laboratory.

The workshop will help participants turn MAA principles into stronger proposals, with sessions on:
🔹 MAA requirements in Horizon Europe calls
🔹 Identifying relevant actors and building multi-actor consortia
🔹 Designing co-creation activities, outcomes and indicators
🔹 Practical tools developed by PREMIERE and the EU-FarmBook platform
🔹 Hands-on exercises and a proposal development simulation

Applications are open until 9 November, and selected participants will be notified on 13 November. Priority will be given to applicants preparing proposals for topics that require the Multi-Actor Approach.
