From Tahisas’ Encomium of the Archangel Saint Michael
👉"The Angel which redeemed me from all evil" Gen. 48:16
This is the miracle of Saint Michael, the messenger of the covenant of Christ, who is King and Lord by essence. May his holy intercession and his prayers preserve us from days of tribulation and hours of trial, and may he shelter us forever from spears cast by day and from all wandering dangers of the night.
There once lived a man in a certain land, a true believer who feared God with a sincere heart. He was compassionate in his deeds, generous in almsgiving, and merciful toward the poor and destitute, who lacked their daily bread and the clothing of a full year. His hope rested firmly in the intercessions and prayers of the Archangel Saint Michael. He was a farmer by labor, and he faithfully observed the Archangel’s feast on the twelfth day of every month.
Now it came to pass that the fruits of the land failed entirely, and the God-fearing man considered within himself, saying, “What shall I do for the feast and commemoration of Saint Michael the Archangel?”
He was brought low into complete poverty, and all that belonged to his household and his substance was lost. His garments were tattered, and want clung to him without relief. He lacked both food and clothing, so that not even for a single day did he have bread to eat. Hunger and thirst wore away his strength; his body grew feeble, and his vigor departed from him. He became as one struck down, unable to rise from his bed or from his chair. Through the severity of his affliction, his spirit was cast down, and he lay as one already dead.
At that very hour and on that very day, Saint Michael the Archangel, who continually entreats mercy for mankind, descended from heaven and came to him, for the measure of his goodness knows no limit.
And suddenly the Archangel appeared before the man who had once known abundance and spoke to him, saying, “O my beloved, thou who didst once honor my feast, why art thou thus overwhelmed with sorrow? Rise early in the morning and delay not. Let thy heart stand firm, and let not thy strength fail. Make haste to the sea and cast thy net therein. At that moment thou shalt draw up a great fish, and the Lord shall grant thee honor.
“Within it thou shalt find abundant blessing. I will not depart from thee, but shall abide with thee always. In times of tribulation I will not abandon thee, nor will I forsake thee in the hour of trial. Thou shalt not be delivered over to affliction, for the power of God shall remain with thee.”
When Saint Michael had spoken these things, he vanished from before him and ascended in glory to heaven.
When the man awoke from his sleep, he knew in his heart that this vision was from God. Therefore, in the morning, obedient to the command of God’s appointed messenger, Saint Michael the Archangel, he rose without delay and went down to the sea. As he had been instructed, he cast his net into the waters, and immediately a great fish was taken. When he opened its mouth, he found within it pure gold, refined and cleansed by fire.
Then his soul was filled with gladness, and he gave thanks to God. He returned rejoicing, bearing the gold in his hands, and he praised the Archangel Saint Michael, who had not despised him in his poverty nor turned away from him in his low estate.
From that gold he caused an icon of Saint Michael the Archangel to be fashioned, adorning it with precious stones and honoring it with great reverence. He placed it within a holy church.
And from that time forward, on the twelfth day of every month, until the end of his life, he faithfully commemorated and kept the feast of Saint Michael the Archangel without interruption.
May the intercession of Saint Michael be with us always and forever. Truly. Amen.
