Department of Computer Science, Addis Ababa University The Department of Computer Science, Addis Ababa University is one of the longest-established Compute In 1993, a Degree program in Computer Science was launched.

This is the official page of the Department of Computer Science, Addis Ababa University. The Computer Science program was started as one of the streams within the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, in the early 1980’s. As computers were introduced into governmental and nongovernmental institutions, the need for trained manpower in Computer Science was very vital. Realizing the

growing need, a diploma program in Computer Science was launched in the evening program in 1983. In addition, the Department also started to offer Computer Science as a minor program for Physics, Statistics, and Library Science students. After the decision of the University Senate in August 2002, the Computer Science program was structured as an independent Department under the Faculty of Informatics. An MSc program in Computer Science was also launched at the beginning of the 2002/03 academic year. The Department stayed under the faculty of Informatics until it was placed under the Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences of the College of Natural Sciences in the new University structure in 2010/11 academic year. The Department of Computer Science is currently running a newly revised four-year BSc program and an MSc program for both regular and extension programs. The Department also has an active role in the IT Doctoral program of the University.

Calling African researchers, engineers, and practitioners β€” LINGUA Africa (https://lnkd.in/d_WHjKzH) is OPEN for applications and deadline is approaching fast!

If you've been working on African languages and key societal challenges, such as agriculture, education, finance, public services, healthcare, and wondering how to bring AI and Natural Language Processing to limited-resource language settings, this is your chance.

LINGUA Africa is a collaboration between Microsoft Lab, the Gates Foundation, Masakhane African Languages Hub, and Google.org, is now accepting proposals to strengthen the language foundations needed for inclusive AI across Africa.
Thousands of African languages remain underrepresented in AI systems. When your language isn't in the model, you're excluded from the digital future. We want to change that - together.

πŸ’° What's on offer:
β€’ Data creation: up to $50K + $50K in compute credits β€’ Model or tool development: up to $100K + $100K in compute credits
β€’ Sectoral applications (real-world deployment): up to $250K + $400K in compute credits

🎯 Who should apply:
Nonprofits, universities, research institutes, social enterprises, startups, cultural organizations, and consortia working in the public interest. We strongly encourage collaborative proposals that bring together complementary expertise β€” cross-domain partnerships, community engagement, and credible paths to impact.
Applications are open to organizations based in Africa and outside Africa (provided meaningful partnership with Africa-based institutions).

πŸ”‘ Priority areas:
🌾 Agriculture & food security πŸ“š Education πŸ₯ Healthcare & public health πŸ’³ Financial inclusion πŸ›οΈ Government & civic services
πŸ“… Deadline: 15 June 2026
