Can books really change a life? On the streets of Johannesburg, Philani Dladla proved they could. Once battling addiction and homelessness, he stood on the pavement passionately reviewing books to passing motorists. If adults liked his words, they could buy the book. If a child showed interest, he gave it away for free — asking only that they return later to share what they learned.

Meet Anke Gowda, a 75-year-old book lover from Haralahalli village near Mysuru, Karnataka, whose unparalleled dedication transformed his passion into public good. Starting at just 20 years old—first as a bus conductor, later while earning his Master’s in Kannada literature—he spent decades collecting books. Eventually, he sold his property in Mysuru to fund his growing collection. Today, his personal library houses nearly two million books, including around half a million rare foreign volumes and over 5,000 dictionaries in various languages .

This isn’t just a treasure trove—it’s a beacon of learning. Researchers, students, civil service aspirants, and even Supreme Court judges have visited to study, all without a membership or fee—just open access to knowledge .

Anke’s wife Vijayalakshmi and son Sagar have been steadfast supporters, helping sustain this lifelong legacy .

This is one of the world's largest private book collections, known as Anke Gowda Jnana Prathistana, or "Knowledge Shrine", in the village of Kennalu, India.

It's thought to be home to more than 1.5 million books.

They're written in 22 Indian languages, as well as foreign languages.

Its owner is 76-year-old Anke Gowda, a former bus ticket collector and sugar factory worker with no formal training in library science.

💡 Scientists Just Created Matter from Light—Fulfilling Einstein’s Dream 💥

In a mind-bending breakthrough nearly a century in the making, physicists at Brookhaven National Laboratory have accomplished what once seemed impossible: they turned pure light into matter.

Using the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), researchers smashed gold ions together at nearly the speed of light. But these weren’t your typical crashes—these ions didn’t even physically touch. Instead, their immense electromagnetic fields generated high-energy photons, which collided to create electron-positron pairs—particles of matter and antimatter—from nothing but light.

This is the first direct observation of the Breit-Wheeler process, a 1934 prediction by physicists Gregory Breit and John Wheeler, and a real-world validation of Einstein’s equation, E = mc², showing energy can indeed become mass.

But that wasn’t all.

The same experiment also provided the first Earth-based evidence of “vacuum birefringence”—a strange quantum effect where light changes direction based on its polarization even in empty space, as predicted by Heisenberg and Euler nearly a century ago.

These discoveries mark a major step in probing the quantum fabric of the universe—and prove that even the vacuum of space isn't truly empty.

In Denmark, education takes a breath of fresh air — quite literally — at a school where walls don’t exist. Instead of traditional classrooms, children learn among trees, streams, and open skies, using the forest itself as their lab, playground, and inspiration. This concept, known as “forest schooling,” encourages hands-on exploration, curiosity, and connection with nature from an early age.

Lessons in math, science, language, and art are woven into natural surroundings — measuring tree growth, observing insect life, writing stories inspired by clouds, or painting with leaves. The approach promotes creativity, resilience, teamwork, and mental well-being, as students move freely, learn actively, and engage all their senses.

Without fluorescent lights or chalkboards, this outdoor classroom proves that education doesn’t need four walls to be meaningful. Denmark’s forest school movement is reimagining learning as something rooted in the real world — green, alive, and limitless.

Umberto Eco, who owned 50,000 books, had this to say about home libraries:
"It is foolish to think that you have to read all the books you buy, as it is foolish to criticize those who buy more books than they will ever be able to read. It would be like saying that you should use all the cutlery or glasses or screwdrivers or drill bits you bought before buying new ones.

"There are things in life that we need to always have plenty of supplies, even if we will only use a small portion.

"If, for example, we consider books as medicine, we understand that it is good to have many at home rather than a few: when you want to feel better, then you go to the 'medicine closet' and choose a book. Not a random one, but the right book for that moment. That's why you should always have a nutrition choice!
"Those who buy only one book, read only that one and then get rid of it. They simply apply the consumer mentality to books, that is, they consider them a consumer product, a good. Those who love books know that a book is anything but a commodity."
