On World Refugee Day 2026, we highlight evidence that matters for the refugee policy efforts in Ethiopia:

Today, Jigjiga University successfully hosted a PSEAH Awareness Forum under the theme:
"Promoting Safe and Respectful Learning Environments: Preventing S*xual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment in Higher Education."

The forum was officially opened by Mrs. Ubah Abdirahman, Deputy Head of the Somali Regional State Women and Children Affairs Office, and Ms. Sundus Abdiwahab, Gender Director of Jigjiga University. In their opening remarks, they emphasized the shared responsibility of creating safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environments that are free from all forms of sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment.

The event brought together university students, student unions, student associations, university leaders, and other stakeholders for a day of awareness raising and dialogue. The program featured cultural performances, an interactive Forum Theatre drama entitled "S*x for Grades," followed by discussions and reflections on preventing sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment and strengthening reporting and safeguarding mechanisms within higher education institutions.

The forum is part of the PSEAH Forum Theatre Initiative, supported by the Embassy of Switzerland through the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and implemented by DT Global in partnership with the Somali Arts Foundation (SAF). The initiative aims to promote awareness, accountability, and collective action towards building safer and more respectful communities.

Jigjiga University organised the Second Somali Regional Women’s Empowerment and Advocacy Forum to advance the strategy to prevent Violence Against Women and Children.

More than 40 women representatives from government institutions, civil society organisations, academia, and Parliament gathered in Jigjiga on Tuesday to strengthen efforts to combat gender-based violence (GBV) and promote women's rights across the Somali Regional State.

The Second Somali Regional Women's Empowerment and Advocacy Groups Forum, held at the Bureau of Women and Children Affairs (BoWCA), focused on validating the region's new Strategy on the Prevention of Violence Against Women and Children under the theme "Together for Advocating the Prevention of Violence Against Women and Children." The forum was jointly organised by the Bureau of Women and Children Affairs, Jigjiga University, and the Hankaal Institute for Peace and Policy Development, with support from Cities Alliance, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

Director of the Hankaal Institute for Peace and Policy Development, Fowsia Abdulkadir, presented the strategy and underscored the need for an inclusive and culturally grounded approach to preventing violence against women and children. She stressed that Somali women have historically demonstrated resilience and agency, despite often being excluded from formal decision-making processes, and called for greater recognition of the Somali value as a foundation for collective action.

Participants reviewed the regional GBV Prevention Strategy, built around four strategic pillars: prevention and social norm change, accessible survivor services, coordination and accountability, and strengthened legal and institutional frameworks. The strategy also promotes survivor-centred responses, community participation, and stronger collaboration between formal institutions and traditional community structures.

The discussion session produced extensive recommendations to improve implementation across the region. Participants identified weak coordination among organisations working on GBV as a major challenge and called for the establishment of a formal coordination hub within the Bureau of Women and Children Affairs. They also recommended appointing a dedicated civil society coordinator, expanding safe shelters in rural and pastoralist communities, strengthening referral systems, and integrating religious leaders into GBV prevention initiatives.

Stakeholders further proposed establishing a digital platform to facilitate mentorship, knowledge sharing, and collaboration among women's organisations, and urged the integration of GBV prevention into regional educational curricula to ensure long-term social transformation.

The forum concluded with agreement on several immediate follow-up actions, including conducting a comprehensive stakeholder mapping exercise, revising the draft strategy to incorporate participants' recommendations, developing a detailed implementation roadmap, and establishing a coordination mechanism to oversee implementation.

Organizers expressed optimism that the forum would mark a significant milestone in strengthening regional cooperation and ensuring that women and girls across the Somali Regional State benefit from a coordinated, inclusive, and community-driven approach to preventing gender-based violence.

Jigjiga University Signs Memorandum of Understanding to Establish the Pastoral Area Universities Consortium (PAUC)

Jigjiga University, together with Samara University, Borana University, Gambella University, and Bonga University, has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish the Pastoral Area Universities Consortium (PAUC).

The Consortium is a landmark partnership designed to strengthen collaboration among universities serving Ethiopia’s pastoral and agro-pastoral communities. Through this initiative, the member universities will work jointly in research, postgraduate education, community engagement, policy dialogue, and resource mobilization.

PAUC will focus on key thematic areas including pastoral livelihoods, climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, natural resource governance, livestock development, peacebuilding, borderland studies, indigenous knowledge systems, health, education, entrepreneurship, and social inclusion.

The signing of this MoU reflects the shared commitment of the five universities to generating knowledge, building human capacity, and contributing to sustainable development, resilience, and peace in Ethiopia’s pastoral regions.
Together, we are creating a stronger platform for research, innovation, and community impact to address the opportunities and challenges facing pastoral and agro-pastoral areas.

Partner Universities are Jigjiga University, samara University, Borana University, Gambella University, and Bonga University.

Field Visit: Looking for Lulumi, June 11 2026

As a part of a collaborative research program, scientists from Jigjiga University’s Yared Laboratory of Entomology have launched the implementation phase of a field study that will Measure the impact of treating important mosquito breeding habitats within the city of Jigjiga.

The research represents a partnership among Jigjiga University, Emory University, and Addis Ababa University. The goal is to combine knowledge of mosquito breeding behavior with remote sensing and mapping techniques to control Anopheles stephensi, a mosquito species spreading into urban areas in Ethiopia, including Jigjiga. Anopheles stephensi breeds in water storage containers and construction pits, which are widely used in Jigjiga. Mosquito eggs are laid in water, where they hatch into larvae that develop through several stages before emerging as flying mosquitoes. Eliminating larvae with larvicides and other measures to manage the water in which they breed can be a critical tool in controlling malaria, which is transmitted by Anopheles stephensi. Known as Project Lulumi (which means larvae in Somali), the research team has identified water sources with high numbers of larvae and is now testing the effect of long-lasting larvicide products to eliminate them.

Find them to eliminate them: Using aerial imagery and mapping technology

Project Lulumi uses satellite imagery and photographs taken from drones to identify and map water bodies that contain the highest numbers of larvae. These images detect mosquito breeding sites and create models that assess and predict where the highest priority sites for larvicide and other interventions are. Research is yielding knowledge about Anopheles stephensi’s breeding behavior and contributing to the design of new technology that can assist in developing a strategic plan to manage the most critical larval sources on a city-wide scale.

This week, Project Lulumi was joined by colleagues from the Ministry of Health and the Somali Regional Health Bureau, as well as partners from Emory University. The field visit included demonstrations of larvicide treatment strategies for highly productive larval habitats and how drones can be used to identify important breeding sites. The visit also included a tour of the insectary in Dr. Yared’s laboratory, which is the only insectary of its kind in eastern Ethiopia. The Yared lab and insectary are focused on research into the transmission of mosquito-borne diseases, measuring the effect of mosquito control products such as insecticides and larvicides, and using genomic information to understand the spread of the invasive Anopheles stephensi mosquito as it expands its presence and range in Ethiopia’s urban areas.

The project is grateful for the advice and guidance received from this visiting group of health experts, along with the offer of continued technical engagement and a shared vision of building a hub of expertise on Anopheles stephensi, and vector-borne diseases in Ethiopia.

Jigjiga University (JJU), in collaboration with the Ethiopian Center for Disability and Development (ECDD), successfully concluded a two-day (DIAT) Training for university position holders and staff from different work sections.

The training generated valuable discussions on improving physical accessibility, creating an inclusive learning environment, and ensuring equal academic opportunities for students with diverse learning needs. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to promoting disability inclusion and implementing practical measures that enhance accessibility, participation, and success for all members of the university community.

This initiative was supported by the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) through Finland’s development cooperation program and reflects Jigjiga University’s continued commitment to fostering an inclusive, accessible, and equitable learning and working environment for students, staff, and visitors with disabilities.

Jigjiga University Signs Partnership Agreement with Geneva Global Ethiopia to Strengthen Teacher Education

Jigjiga University has officially signed a partnership agreement with Geneva Global Ethiopia under the Leaders in Teaching Ethiopia (LiTE) Program, a national initiative aimed at strengthening teacher education systems and advancing sustainable educational reforms across Ethiopia.

The agreement was signed during a coordination meeting organized by Geneva Global Ethiopia in Addis Ababa, bringing together leaders of teacher education institutions from across the country. The partnership seeks to enhance institutional collaboration, support the integration of Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) reforms, and strengthen the quality of teaching and learning through sustainable capacity-building initiatives.

Jigjiga University was represented by its President, Dr. Saed Mohamed, while Geneva Global Ethiopia was represented by its Country Director, Mr. Abebaw Abitie.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Saed Mohamed reaffirmed Jigjiga University's commitment to contributing to national education transformation efforts and strengthening teacher preparation through innovation, collaboration, and institutional excellence.

The partnership forms part of the broader Leaders in Teaching Ethiopia (LiTE) Program, implemented by Geneva Global Ethiopia in collaboration with Imagine1Day, Education Development Trust (EDT), and the Ministry of Education. The program works with universities, Colleges of Teacher Education, and other educational institutions to improve teacher education systems and promote long-term educational quality and sustainability across Ethiopia.

Jigjiga University Successfully Commences National Exit Examinations

Jigjiga University officially kicked off its national undergraduate exit examinations today, marking a significant milestone in the academic calendar. This year’s assessment carries added momentum as it follows closely on the heels of the successful conclusion of the national exams for remedial students.

To ensure the highest standards of oversight, a senior leadership delegation led by the Academic Vice President, Dr. Musa Mohamed, Vice President for Administration and Development Bashir Yusuf, conducted a comprehensive inspection of the examination centers today. The team evaluated the readiness of testing facilities, the effectiveness of logistical arrangements, and adherence to national guidelines. During the visit, the leadership commended the staff for their diligence in creating a secure and conducive environment, emphasizing that this exam serves as a vital bridge between theoretical training and professional workforce readiness.

As the examinations progress, the university administration remains fully dedicated to supporting students through this final academic hurdle. With all necessary technical and human resources firmly in place, the leadership expressed confidence in the university's ability to facilitate a smooth and fair testing period. Jigjiga University Conducts Disability Inclusion and Awareness Training for Position Holders and Staff from Different Work Sections

Jigjiga University (JJU), in collaboration with the Ethiopian Center for Disability and Development (ECDD), successfully conducted a two-day Disability Inclusion and Awareness Training (DIAT) for university position holders and staff from different work sections. The training was held from JUNE 6–7, 2026, with the objective of strengthening awareness, knowledge, and commitment toward disability inclusion across the university.

This initiative was supported by the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) through Finland’s development cooperation program. The training reflects Jigjiga University's continued dedication to promoting an inclusive, accessible, and equitable learning and working environment for students, staff, and visitors with disabilities.

The training provided participants with practical knowledge and skills to better understand disability issues and their responsibilities in fostering inclusion within their respective offices and departments. Key topics included disability rights, inclusive communication, reasonable accommodation, accessibility, equal participation, and strategies for creating a disability-inclusive university environment.

Participants engaged in discussions on the challenges faced by persons with disabilities in higher education and explored ways to enhance institutional support and accessibility. The training emphasized the important role of university leaders and staff in ensuring that disability inclusion becomes an integral part of policies, services, and daily operations across the institution.

Through such initiatives, Jigjiga University continues to strengthen its commitment to building a campus community where diversity is valued and all individuals have equal opportunities to learn, work, and succeed.
