📢 Free Eye Screening Program Update 👁️🏫

Yirgalem Hospital Medical College, Outreach Community Service, successfully conducted a Free Eye Screening Program in four KG schools within the community.

Over the last week, about 200 kindergarten students received eye screening services aimed at early detection of vision problems and promoting healthy learning environments for children.

📢 Training on Clinical Specimen Collection Conducted at Yirgalem Hospital Medical College (April 2–3)

Yirgalem Hospital Medical College successfully conducted a cascaded training on clinical specimen collection aimed at revitalizing and strengthening microbiological culture and Drug Susceptibility Testing (DST) services.

The training brought together doctors, nurses, microbiologists, and laboratory professionals from different departments, promoting teamwork and improving the quality of specimen management for accurate diagnosis.

🔬 The training focused on:
• Proper specimen collection, handling, and transportation
• Infection prevention and biosafety
• Improving microbiological culture and DST quality
• Strengthening AMR (Antimicrobial Resistance) surveillance

💬 Leadership Remarks:

👤 Mr. Temesgen Sermiso, Chief Executive Director, emphasized that expanding culture and DST services is a key institutional priority and a cornerstone for implementing effective AMR stewardship initiatives.

👨‍⚕️ Dr. Zerihun, Clinical Vice General Director, highlighted that strengthening these services is critical for improving quality of care, and noted that despite resource challenges, the college is supported by EPHI and strong internal commitment to ensure sustainability. He also stressed the importance of generating local AMR profiles and antibiograms to guide evidence-based treatment.

✅ This initiative marks an important step toward improving diagnostic services and patient care at Yirgalem Hospital Medical College.

relationship Yirgalem Hospital Services Through International Collaboration:-
✍️Sidama Regional State president, his Excellency Desta Ledamo received and held discussions in his office with a delegation from the non-governmental organization “Doctors for Ethiopia,” based in Germany.

The president met with the delegation to discuss ways to improve the services of Yirgalem Hospital beyond its current level.

During the discussion, it was stated that “Doctors for Ethiopia,” a non-governmental organization, has been providing support to Yirgalem Hospital over the past eleven years, particularly in the areas of medical equipment and capacity building.
