“Felid vocalizations and their role in ex situ welfare and in situ conservation” is a project of Manchester Metropolitan University that aims to test bioacoustic techniques to improve in situ census methods, and ex situ captive animal management. A crucial prerequisite to accomplishing the aim is to collect a large number of high quality recordings of vocalisations of Felids in particular of leopards (Panthera pardus) and Jaguars (Panthera onca). Given the difficulty in recording cats in the wild, the most efficient method is to record vocalisations from captive animals. So, the project is working in collaboration with zoos and zoological institutions that allow us to collect sound recordings of their felid individuals/species and test sound playback to develop the census method.
