The Musèe Somme Albert Trench Museum is situated in an ancient underground network dating back to the 13th century which also served as an air raid shelter during The Second World War.
The museum is dedicated to the memory of the First World War. Helmets, rifles, equipment... a series of display cases present a collection of artefacts from the War.
On our descent 10 metres underground we were taken into the past by a range of scenes representing trench warfare evoking the lives of the soldiers during "the big push".

Over 9 million animals died during WWI including many thousands of Australian war horses, mules, donkeys, pigeons and dogs and no Australian war animals were returned home due to quarantine restrictions. On the 21st of July 2017 the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation opened Australia’s official war animal memorial in Pozieres, France. We were fortunate enough to visit this memorial and pay our respects to the animals who served in the War. May they rest in peace.

Bullecourt 1917, Jean and Denise Letaille museum focuses on two of the bloodiest battles on the Western Front – the Battles of Bullecourt, fought during the First World War in 1917. The museum is arranged in two sections. The ‘Battle Room’ covers the history of the First World War and Battles of Bullecourt in 1917. The ‘Tribute Hall’ covers the personal stories of Australians who fought in Bullecourt including images of soldiers from various nations who fought, died and went missing at Bullecourt and related artefacts and documents. Another moving experience for the group.

On Tuesday the 19th of September, 4 students from our tour had the incredible opportunity to lay a wreath at the Menin Gate in Ypres, Belgium.

Our visit to Villers-Bretonneux at the Franco Australian Museum was an emotional experience to say the least. Each object in this museum has a story to share and we were fortunate enough to view these artefacts. Not only were there personal objects to share, the museum also contained archival images and moving testimonies of friendship and bravery. This unprecedented history or war is told through a museographical journey divided into four sections: A place of memory and commemoration, Memories of WWl, Our National Memory and Town Memories.

Today we had the privilege of visiting Heath Cemetery, where a total of 985 Australian soldiers of World War I are buried. On behalf of our students and staff, Amelia-Jane Cook-Webber is pictured laying a wreath on the grave of one of two known Indigenous soldiers buried here: Reg. W. R. Rawlings, an Aboriginal soldier, and the uncle of Private Fred Saunders.

Arras ❤️ It is hard to imagine that this town was so heavily affected by the Battle of Arras and The Second Battle of the Somme that most of the city had to be rebuilt. The buildings are less than 100 years old but the same materials were used to reconstruct the town to its original form.

We have now arrived in Amiens. Our first stop was the The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Amiens or simply the Amiens Cathedral. The Cathedral's south door is set up as a commemoration of Australia's involvement in WWI. This memorial commemorates the soldiers who fought and died in the Battle of Somme. The gothic style architecture, built in the 13th century still stands in its original form today as this building was not destroyed by the war.

Yesterday we had the privilege of visiting Tyne Cot cemetery, where twelve thousand soldiers of the First World War are buried and the names of another missing thirty-five thousand are memorialised. Tyne Cot is the largest cemetery in the world. Three soldiers lie here that were awarded the Victoria Cross, and the youngest known soldiers were just seventeen years of age. An opportunity equally as incredible as it was haunting.

Our first stop today was the 'Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery' in Armentières.
We made this stop as it was significant to student Nathan Loveridge, as his great great grandfather rests here. Nathan had the opportunity to visit his grave and lay a poppy in respect of him.
We all thank Francis Williams for his service in WWI.
May he rest in peace.
