Meet Jennifer Orth-Veillon, or Dr. OV to her students, an LMC professor and the director of the First-Year Semester Abroad Program (FYSA) here at GTE!
After growing up in the U.S., her time studying abroad in college would forever change her life. When she first arrived in Paris to stay with her host family, her jaw dropped when she opened the door to her new bedroom to be met with a stunning view of the Eiffel Tower; she knew at that moment that her journey in France would be incredible. Even with her previous knowledge and passion for French language and culture, nothing could prepare her for the everyday obstacles she faced in a new country, and so in her teaching, she invokes her empathy for the challenges and growth her students experience ☀️
At GTE, she often has opportunities to travel around Metz and around Europe with her students, and she cherishes the memories of getting to know her students and watching them discover the world with her guidance. FYSA includes 7 weekends of travel through Italy, France, Luxembourg, Germany, and more, where she gets the pleasure of introducing her students to local food, language, history, and culture. She has had the unique position of connecting with her students’ experiences as Americans studying abroad. But now, after many years, she has through and through become “une femme française,” now having settled in Metz with her French husband and daughter.
“Georgia Tech was the best place I’ve ever worked, and France was the best place I’ve ever lived, so this opportunity was perfect for me.” - Dr. OV
A very special 🐝🇫🇷
