Greetings,
Most of us love heroes and very recently we saw a real one in the person of Mamoudou Gassama, an illegal immigrant (“un sans papiers”) from Mali who not only saved the life of a child, but saw his destiny changed in only a matter of minutes.
Imagine him sitting calmly in a bar to watch a football match and someone telling him, “Mamadou, because of what you are going to do in the next 5 minutes, you will become an international hero seen on videos by millions all over the world, be invited to meet the President of the Republic in person, be granted French citizenship and become a Paris firefighter.” Most of us would have replied, “What have you been smoking?”
But that’s exactly what happened and we could all be happy for the little boy and for Mamoudou.
Not only did Mamoudou put his own life in danger, but he was exposing himself as an illegal immigrant.
His deed was truly selfless (“désintéressé, altruiste”).
