Expression fruits n°5 : en avoir gros sur la patate
➡ to have a lot on the potato (litterally) 🥔

This expression is a funny variation of "en avoir gros sur le coeur", which means "to be sad". 🫀 It is supposed to be because of the similarity in shape between a heart and a potato! Personally, I don't think it looks the same, do you? 😂

💬 Attention, million dollar question... For you, is the potato a fruit or a vegetable?

[🇺🇸 ENGLISH 🇬🇧]

Expression Mars n°4 : avoir le mon
➡to have/to get the melon

This expression is easy to understand! Sometimes, when we become popular, we become arrogant. In France, we say that our head gets bigger (and we also have an expresson for that: prendre la grosse tête (take the big head).
As a melon is big, "avoir le melon" means you feel superior, you are arrogant.

💬 In your opinion, which famous people "a le melon"?

[🇬🇧 ENGLISH 🇺🇸]

Expression n°3 : tomber dans les pommes 🍏
➡ to fall in the apples (literaly)

The origin of this expression is not sure!
"Falling into apples" is supposedly derived from the medieval expression "tomber dans les pâmess". "Pâme" means "to faint". Today, "tomber dans les pommes" also means to faint.

💬 Have you ever tomber dans les pommes?

Here is the testimony of one of my great students! An American, level B2, who took mini group classes and who continues today in individual. She started at B1 level and is now B2 in a few months, I am proud of her progress!

Never give up! With work and a good teacher (like me, of course :DD), you can master French like a pro, and live in France with peace of mind!

Heyyy! After a short month of February, we are already in March!
In March, spring is coming, trees and flowers are blooming, fruits are growing... and that's why I decided to share with you some expressions around fruits and vegetables. Well, okay, March is not exactly the season of fruits and vegetables, but let's say it starts slowly.

There are so many expressions that I will probably have to do a second month on this subject!

I'm sure you've already tried, as best you can, to pronounce that damn French /r/... If you have: stop! ❌It's useless! No matter how you pronounce the "r" in the word "France", the word will always be the same.
Indeed, the /r/ is not a relevant sound in French, which means that you can say it as you want, it doesn't matter on the words. 👍

On the other hand, the /u/ (ou) sound is relevant! If you pronounce it wrong, the word changes! The most obvious example is /ku/ ("cou" = neck). Les tend to pronounce /ky/ ("cul") which means...ass! 🍑

Expression n°4 = Tenir la chandelle
➡ to hold the candle (litteraly)

Before the lamps existed, the servants had to hold a candle while their master made youpali youpala... So "tenir la chandelle" means being alone in the middle of a couple!

💬 do you "tenir la chandelle" sometimes?

[🇬🇧 ENGLISH 🇺🇸]

Expression n°3 = avoir un cœur d'artichaut.
➡ to have a heart of artichoke (litteraly)

The artichoke is eaten leaf by leaf, easily detaching one by one those surrounding the heart... This way, "avoir un coeur d'artichaut" means fall in love very easily! The one who has "un coeur d'artichaut" distributes his love to everyone!

💬 Do you have un coeur d'artichaut?
