A visit with Nadia Barrientos to Botticelli’s frescoes of the Cardinal Virtues in Esztergom last week, accompanied by their restorer, Zsuzsanna Weirdl. With the ongoing completion of the restoration, the frescoes have regained the original freshness of the first layer, where the artist’s initial stroke can be observed. Once again (it’s my third visit here), I am struck by the exact correspondence between the profile of the face of Strength and that of the Hour of Botticelli’s Birth of Venus. Zsuzsanna reveals to us a detail that remained unknown until her restoration: a sketch of the face that the artist hid under a solid patch of black in the shadow of the column. A sure sign that the artist is not an imitator but rather is creating original work. And this free stroke is amazingly similar to the line of Hour’s face in the Birth of Venus. Hoping the frescoes will soon be accessible to the public
