Incoming first year away students! Are you interested in representing NYU Liberal Studies and NYU Paris as a FACE of NYU? The FACES Project is an award-winning video series that allows incoming, current and prospective students to get a taste of life at NYU. This project puts a face and a name to the transitioning experience and encourages engagement through the use of storytelling and technology. Each year, approximately 15 incoming students from each school and Global Campus have the opportunity to become FACES and share their unique story with the NYU community.

Liberal Studies congratulates Professor Colleen Pearl, who has received the Liberal Studies Teaching Award for Global Site Faculty! The award recognizes faculty members teaching Liberal Studies students at the study away sites in the NYU global network for their excellence in teaching and commitment to global pedagogy in the LS curriculum.

“[Professor Pearl] does more than teach writing. She has opened me up to new ways of thinking and viewing the world. It is because of her that I notice all the complexities to any and every problem, the different sides to everything, and most importantly, how I can make a difference... From the male gaze to gender norms to environmental issues, Professor Pearl has opened me up to the complexities of every issue.”

Calling all FYA Paris students: submit your story to the Crossing Borders, Shifting Identities Video Project today!

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Crossing Borders, Shifting Identities Video Project

Share your perspective! Submit your video! Win Prizes!

* What do you wish you had known before studying away?
* What is it like to be you at your site?
* How has your global experience been challenging, affirming, or transformative?

Share a story and give practical tips to future students.

The Liberal Studies Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee seeks short video submissions, up to three minutes, on the diverse and divergent student experiences of identity at the global sites. A selection of videos will be compiled & shared with the LS community to create a space of conversation about study away experiences.

All submitters will be entered into a lottery to win a Google Home Mini or Amazon Fire Stick (9 total available). Items can be picked up at Liberal Studies in New York, now or next semester, or shipped to a US location.

No experience necessary! Please see our Tips and Submission Guidelines at bit.ly/DEIvideoproject before you begin. If you have questions or would like further guidance on making a video, please email Mitra Rastegar, [email protected]. The submission deadline is Sunday, May 12.

"NYU students typically expect to start their first year under the arch in Washington Square Park, but I began mine in the shadow of the Arc de Triomphe. My first year in Paris was filled with amazing trips and new, everlasting friendships, but what stuck with me the most was the Parisian lifestyle."

Hear from Global Liberal Studies student Hannah B. about studying away in Paris -- both as a first year and a junior!

This GLS student is studying abroad in Paris for the second time. Here’s her thoughts on what’s different and what she’s looking forward to.

One of our favorite parts of being at a global university, is seeing all the places our students travel both near and far. Any NYU Paris alumns remember walking down gorgeous Parisian streets like this one?

Meet Liam North who just finished his sophomore year in the Core Program. Liam started his first year in Liberal Studies at NYU Paris and shared with us a little about himself and what he enjoyed about studying in “the City of Lights”.

Hometown: Fremont, CA (Bay Area)

Program/Year: LS Core Program transitioning to CAS.

Describe yourself in three words: Positive, Outgoing, Athletic

Favorite class you took your first year? Social Foundations I with Professor Max Blechman (it’s essentially Philosophy 101).

What do you plan to study at NYU? I plan to declare a double major in Romance Languages and Psychology.

What was the first thing you thought after confirming you’d be studying at NYU Paris? I could not wait to speak French every day!

Favorite souvenir from your travels: My photos—I experiment a lot with photography so I took thousands of photos on my DSLR throughout the year.

Must-have item for living at the NYU Paris residence halls: A toaster or panini maker.

What is the most surprising item in your suitcase? Multiple soccer balls (I figured I’d lose at least one).

What is your favorite season in Paris and why? The summer and fall; I am chronically allergic to the cold (I’m from California).

Favorite spot in Paris to go in your free time: Charenton-le-Pont, les bois de Vincennes, and La promenade plantée

Favorite NYU Paris moment: The trip we took to Bayonne/the Basque region of France. We did a beach clean-up and swam in the ocean for an entire afternoon—it was wonderful.

What advice would you give to an incoming first year student heading to NYU Paris? Approach everything with a positive attitude and roll with the punches. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there because that’s the only way you're going to really connect with local Parisians.
