Another successful MA thesis defense at our school😊.
Monica Hatfield’s research explored a fascinating and very relevant question: why do some conflict mediations succeed while others fail, even when accepting a negotiated resolution would appear strategically beneficial for all actors involved?
Challenging purely rationalist approaches in international relations, her thesis examined how emotions, identity, fear, honor, and cognitive-affective structures shape political decision-making processes.
Congratulations Monica on a very interesting, ambitious, and interdisciplinary piece of research👏🏽👏🏽.

Today we continued our MA thesis defenses with Gregg Gonzales’ work on nuclear proliferation and game theory.

A very timely topic, his thesis explored whether nuclear proliferation can be understood as a rational strategy through an original “stacked game” framework combining the Prisoner’s Dilemma, Stag Hunt, and Chicken Game.

A great piece of work, both ambitious and original, with potential applications beyond nuclear proliferation to broader strategic and policy decision-making. Congratulations, Gregg👏🏽👏🏽

Yesterday, we continued our MA thesis defense season with Yasmin Kaidová’s excellent work.

In her thesis, Yasmin examined how the securitization of migration within the European Union impacts refugee protections under EU and international human rights law, through a comparative analysis of Germany and Hungary.

It is a thoughtful, nuanced, and highly relevant contribution to ongoing debates on migration, asylum, and human rights.

Congratulations to Yasmin for her impressive work and defense!

What a great day at AGS Paris for our 20th Annual International Graduate Student Conference 📚
With this year’s theme Beyond Polarity: Reimagining Global Governance, we had inspiring discussions on diplomacy, security, climate, AI and the future of global cooperation, q***r studies, and, just as importantly, wonderful exchanges with so many AGS students, scholars, colleagues and friends.
Thank you to everyone who made this such a vibrant and engaging day 🤍🙏🏽

While we prepare for the 20th International Graduate Conference at the American Graduate School in Paris, “Beyond Polarity: Reimagining Global Governance” (April 17, 2026), it is inspiring to look back at the amazing and thought provoking energy of our last gathering.

In April 2025, AGS hosted “Trump 2.0: Reshuffling the International Deck,” where emerging scholars explored shifting U.S. foreign policy, regional governance, and the intersections of social movements, environmental politics, and AI. The discussions were rigorous, generous, and deeply timely.

And now, looking ahead, in a world marked by fragmentation, multipolar tensions, and democratic uncertainty, Beyond Polarity invites graduate scholars to rethink global governance beyond binaries.

📌 Abstract deadline: 6 PM EST, March 2, 2026

Yesterday, we celebrated the start of a new semester and our new AGS Campus Kléber, just a few steps from the Arc de Triomphe.

It was amazing to share this moment with our students, professors, and staff, first over a cocktail, then with a beautiful visit to the top of the Arc.

Wishing you all a great semester!!!
