Welcome back! This is the last post of our series: today, we will tell you everything that happened on Day 5 of our NMUN conference in New York! If you want to learn more about the other days, don’t forget to check our previous posts! ;)

On this last day, the different delegations from each school got the chance to visit the UN Headquarters, where the closing ceremony took place! We were sitting in the General Assembly room in the seats of actual diplomats— an incredible honor just to be there. We listened to speeches and took A LOT of pictures, because this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! Hopefully, next time we are the UN Headquarters, it will be as diplomats representing our countries, or as UN staff!

Meanwhile, we were also rewarded for our months of diligent preparations: several of our delegates received individual awards for their position papers, in the Security Council, General Assembly 3, C-34, UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) and the Conference of the Parties (COP)! Yay! We also received a collective award for the performance of our delegation: distinguished delegation! Overall, we got 6 awards — the first time a delegation from SciencesPo receives so many awards at the NMUN conference! Congratulations everyone! 🙂

For all this, we feel extremely grateful, and we would like to thank Qatar Foundation again, for their endless support, and their generosity. Without them, we would never have had the chance to participate in this simulation in New York! Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development is an NGO created in 1995 that empowers students like us, because they believe human potential is the most precious resource of all. Learn more about Qatar Foundation on their page https://www.facebook.com/QatarFoundation/ or on their website: https://www.qf.org.qa/about 😉 From the bottom of our hearts, thank you Qatar Foundation!

And a big thank you to all of you who followed our journey from the beginning last October, or who joined more recently. We love you! 🙂

Hello friends and welcome back! 🙂

Today we shall tell you about Day 4 of our NMUN conference in New York City.

After our visit of the Permanent Mission of Qatar on Day 2, the delegation from Sciences Po was honoured to be invited to the Permanent Mission of the Republic of France to the United Nations! Warmly welcomed, we got the chance to discuss with the Spokesperson of the Permanent Mission for an hour and a half. After being treated to a presentation concerning France’s position and priorities at the UN, as well as the importance of having a seat at the Security Council, our delegates had the opportunity to indulge in a Q&A session.

Since we all have a passion for geopolitics and diplomacy, we talked about the situation in Mali, the arms trade, human rights issues, and climate change developments. We even discussed France and Mexico’s idea to regulate the veto powers of the five Permanent Members of the Security Council at length!

The Permanent Mission of the Republic of France to the United Nations is located in the center of New York, not far from the United Nations Headquarters, and the view from the building was absolutely breathtaking and picture-perfect. Our delegation would like to thank the Permanent Mission of France to the United Nations for their warm welcome and for engaging us in a fascinating discussion.

See you soon for our last post of this series about Day 5, the final day of the conference! ;)

Hello again! :) Today, we will tell you more about Day 3 of the NMUN conference. Day 3 was one of the busiest days of the simulation. We continued to write working papers, soon to become draft resolutions, negotiating with others to get our ideas and interests represented. At the same time, different working groups were merging their papers if they had similar ideas presented. Indeed, NMUN isn’t just about giving speeches, we write a lot before and during the conference too. In Paris, we prepared our position papers for months. This entailed learning about the position of Qatar and the United States on different global issues and questions of geopolitics.

That being said, we did give tons of speeches! We start our speeches with “Honourable Chair, distinguished delegates…” and always end them with “Thank you.” If you click on the video attached to this post, you can listen to Jorja giving a speech in the Commission on the Status of Women about the important role of Qatar Foundation when it comes to educating women and helping them access the fields of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The State of Qatar indeed, is a leader in the region, in terms of gender equality, especially in the private sector. If you want to learn more about Qatar Foundation, you can check their page: https://www.facebook.com/QatarFoundation/ or their website: https://www.qf.org.qa/about !

While most of our delegates were busy acting as diplomats, Aemin, our most experienced delegate, got the opportunity of chairing one of the General Assemblies. She entertained motions and votes, reviewed working papers, and made our delegation proud.

See you very soon for Day 4, one of our favourite days ;)

Hi everyone! We are continuing our series on the NMUN conference in New York City. Today, we will tell you more about Day 2, one of the most important days of the conference! (See previous post for what happened on day 1 :) )

As you may have seen on our page, the delegation from SciencesPo was invited to visit the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, conveniently located in front of the UN Headquarter in New York City. It was a pleasure and an honor to dialogue with the Deputy Permanent Representative, Mr. Jassim Al-Maawda, about foreign polices of the State of Qatar and the Qatar Foundation.

Qatar Foundation is a non-profit organization made up of more than 50 entities working in education, research, and community development. At the heart of everything they do is the knowledge that the future lies in unlocking the most precious resource of all: human potential. Its unique ecosystem is built on initiatives that address the most pressing challenges, create global opportunities, and empower people to shape our present and future.

One of Qatar Foundation's mission areas is education, and notably their flagship initiative, Education City. Education City is home to branch campuses of some of the world’s leading educational institutes, a homegrown university, and other research, scholastic, and community centers. It provides an unparalleled, unique educational experience, where students can benefit from a diverse global education while exploring their innovative capabilities and ideas all the way to fruition. Qatar Foundation promotes open channels of communication and debate to address local and global issues, while empowering secondary and university students like us, to develop their academic and personal skills. You can check their website at: https://www.qf.org.qa/about

The delegation from SciencesPo is extremely grateful for Qatar Foundation’s support in the enriching educational experience that is NMUN. We can’t thank them enough because, if it wasn’t for Qatar Foundation’s generosity, we would probably never had the chance to participate in this simulation on another continent!

See you later for Day 3! ;)

Good afternoon everyone! (Yes, it's the afternoon in New York!) We hope you are having a good day. Today is perfect for our team: the NMUN conference we attended in New York City just ended and we absolutely loved it! We wanted to share our experience with you, so tag along!

On day 1, we discovered all the amazing people we would work with during the conference. Coming from over 120 UN Member States, hundreds of students proudly represented the country assigned to them. As you know, the delegation from SciencesPo represented the State of Qatar, and two of our delegates represented the United States of America in the Security Council.

As soon as the conference started, we negotiated to adopt our preferred agenda order, voted on the first day. We ended up, during the conference, discussing major global issues, such as climate change, gender mainstreaming, peace and security, or the fight against extremism. Our delegates gave passionate speeches, setting the record straight about Qatar’s willingness to see meaningful changes and translate ideas into actions. It was challenging yet inspiring for us to act as diplomats, to explain Qatar’s position and highlight the important work of the Qatar Foundation, especially in the field of education!

For some of us, this conference was also the first time visiting New York City. We were staying at Times Square, and seeing all the skyscrapers, lights and colors— Our eyes were round with wonder.

Follow us to see what happened on day 2! ;)
