The month of April and the beginning of May finished off our year in Versailles with nonstop activities. The history week with William J.R. Curtis began in Versailles and ended at Ronchamp with many bus rides and architectural visits in between, including buildings by Le Corbusier, Jean Nouvelle, and Bernard Tschumi, among others.
After the intensive history week, the group split into three sections for three weeks of traveling and sketching. Two groups headed to Athens and the Islands of Greece with Jim Warfield and Steve Siegel while the third group traveled along the Amalfi Coast of Italy with Jack Kelly. The sketch trips were guided by the leading professors, giving students an intensive workshop on sketching in incredible mediterranean destinations. Before and after the 10 days of the guided sketch trips students were free to travel on their own, visiting Italy, Ireland, Croatia, Greece, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, and others.
Following the three weeks of travel, students returned to Versailles for the final week of academics at ENSA-V. The SAPV hosted an exhibition of student work from the year, inviting all of the students as well as some french faculty, guest architects, UIUC faculty, and other special guests. Everyone gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of the year, peruse the newly printed yearbooks, and then attended a final lecture after the reception. Final reviews consumed most of the following day, which finished with one last reception.
With the end of the Academic year behind us, students have already begun to head back to the USA to begin summer studio, internships, and general adjustment to living in a seemingly new country after a year in France. While some students remain in Europe to travel a while longer, the UIUC SAPV program 2012 has officially come to an end
