The Confucius Institute of the University of Aberdeen aims to provide Chinese language teaching and culture classes and cultural events to the North East Scotland community, including University staff and students, schools, business and industry, and community organisations and individuals. It acts as a linguistic and cultural bridge, promoting knowledge exchange between China and the people of North East Scotland and serving as the first port of call for information on China.

Brushes ready? We begin tomorrow!

There’s still time to join one of our Chinese Brush Painting workshops with Zhang Chi this weekend (21st–22nd March). Whether you choose birds on Saturday morning or bamboo and panda on Sunday, you’ll enjoy a welcoming atmosphere and expert guidance throughout.

We’re taking Chinese Brush Painting to Huntly!

Join Zhang Chi on Sunday 22nd March 11am–1pm at Number 30 for a special workshop exploring bamboo and panda imagery. Bamboo has long symbolised strength and integrity in Chinese culture, and this session offers a calm, creative way to explore its elegant forms.

Join us for a special evening with Michael Beaney as he introduces his new book The Joy of Chinese Philosophy.

In this engaging lecture, Professor Beaney explores the famous “happy fish” dialogue from the Zhuangzi, revealing key ideas from ancient Chinese philosophy and showing how they can enrich contemporary philosophical thinking.

On 21st March (10am–12pm), Zhang Chi will guide participants in bringing graceful birds to life through expressive brushwork, flowing ink and vibrant colour. Discover how symbolism and movement combine to create striking compositions.
