A Different Kind of Delivery: Co‑Production Workshop 🤰📱

A co‑production workshop with pregnant women was recently held in the Sir Ian Wood Building to inform the development of a relaxation app for fear of childbirth.

Dr Katrina Forbes-McKay said:

"Fear of Childbirth affects up to 60% of pregnant women. Our research suggests that positive well-being and confidence in birthing skills, such as relaxation, can lower fear. We are now working with pregnant women to shape a relaxation App for Fear of Childbirth. This is a great example of interdisciplinary work, where midwifery, psychology and computing come together. It's great to be part of such an amazing team with Dr Mo Tabib (School of Health, RGU), Shahana Bano, Verda Munir and Joan Alza (RGU School of Computing, Engineering & Technology). Thanks to Robert Gordon University's interdisciplinary Seed Fund for supporting this, I’m really looking forward to seeing where this takes us."

Colleagues Carole Lyons and Dr Judith Oloo recently coordinated the Online LLB students' attendance of the proceedings at the UK Supreme Court. The Court's sitting in Glasgow marked a significant and historic occasion as it is the second time the UK Supreme Court has sat in Scotland. The visit not only provided an invaluable educational experience, enabling students to observe appellate advocacy and judicial reasoning at the highest level of the UK legal system but was also a unique opportunity for students to meet and to connect their academic studies with live legal practice.

Experiences of this nature make a meaningful contribution to student learning, professional development, and community building.

Legally Righting a Wrong: Scottish Witch Pardons and the Law

📆 Tuesday 2nd June 2026 at 5pm
📍 Music Hall Aberdeen

The School of Law and Social Sciences is marking its sponsorship of the forthcoming production of Legally Blonde with a guest talk by Dr Claire Mitchell KC. Dr Mitchell KC was called to the Bar in 2003, having been a solicitor in private practice since 1996.

Claire has been instructed in many first instance trials, Fatal Accident Inquiries and Extradition cases over the past 23 years. Her main practice has been in the Court of Appeal, with an emphasis on cases involving complex and novel legal arguments and raising constitutional and human rights issues.

She has conducted innumerable appeals over the past two decades, and attended the Privy Council and Supreme Court on several occasions in relation to such cases.

In recent years, she has been heavily involved in the campaign to pardon those 4000 Scottish people - mainly women - who were wrongly accused of witchcraft. This led to a formally apology from the Scottish Government on behalf of the country in 2023. Claire and Zoe Venditozzi released a book "How to Kill a Witch, a Guide for the Patriarchy" in 2025.

The BA (Hons) Social Work course marked a fantastic milestone as our fourth‑year students submitted their dissertations. It was a wonderful moment to celebrate their achievements, recognising the hard work, dedication, and deep commitment they have shown throughout their studies — and to the marginalised and vulnerable people and communities they will soon support as fully qualified social workers.

A huge well done to everyone. As a School, we are incredibly proud of you all and wish you the very best as you take your next steps into practice. We hope to hear about your future accomplishments very soon. 👏

The School of Law and Social Sciences was delighted to attend and support the launch of SPeiR, Robert Gordon University's new Centre for Stories, Place, and Northern Communities Research.

Hearing from the co-directors, our colleague Professor Peter Reid and Dr Rachael Ironside from Aberdeen Business School speak about their commitment to promoting the stories and heritage of the North East was truly inspiring.

Michael Terway of the National Trust for Scotland and Doric storyteller, Jackie Ross also provided valuable contribution.

Held in the historic Trinity Hall, home to the Seven Incorporated Trades of Aberdeen, the event reflected the deep cultural roots SPeiR aims to explore.

Professor Chris Yuill from the School of Law and Social Sciences has concluded his three‑year term as Chair of The British Sociological Association. This marks the end of a period of significant national leadership for sociology. His term formally ended at this year’s BSA Annual Conference.

Professor Yuill has served the BSA with distinction for a total of 15 years as a trustee. During his time, he undertook multiple senior roles including Treasurer, Vice Chair, Conference Organiser, Membership Director, and Publications Director. He led the Association through the challenges of the aftermath of Covid, helping to stabilise the organisation and position it for renewed growth in a rapidly changing academic landscape.

A standout achievement of his trusteeship was the inauguration of the BSA Annual Equality Lecture, delivered in partnership with the British Library and held each year in London between 2011 and 2019. The lecture series featured leading international scholars such as Richard Wilkinson, Danny Dorling, Tom Shakespeare, Kalwant Bhopal, and Jack Halberstram.

Incoming Chair Dr Jen Remnant described Professor Yuill as “a trailblazer who has shown an extraordinary level of commitment,” noting the lasting impact of his leadership on the Association and the wider discipline.
