🌎 From Aberdeen to São Paulo: exploring the future of regulation

Three of our PhD students recently travelled to Brazil to explore the future of regulatory governance, share their research and connect with fellow researchers from around the world.

From climate law and conscientious objection in medicine to regulation and compliance, their experiences in São Paulo are helping to shape and strengthen their doctoral research back in Aberdeen.

The Death & Law: Interdisciplinary Explorations project at the School of Law has recently completed a series of three workshops with the generous support of a Royal Society of Edinburgh Research Collaboration Grant.

Using law as a starting point, these workshops drew on a range of disciplines to critically examine how society navigates death, legacy, and the afterlife.

Project members were pleased to welcome contributors from institutions across Scotland, the UK and abroad. The workshops have provided an opportunity to strengthen the scholarly networks between academics with similar research interests across different jurisdictions. They will also support the publication of an upcoming edited volume which brings together legal scholarship with death studies.

As the offshore wind industry continues to grow, so too do the challenges of protecting the health, safety and wellbeing of its workforce.

Conversations on Death

What happens to our dignity after death? Can the dead be harmed? How is technology changing the way we grieve?

We're excited to launch the Conversations on Death Book Club, a free monthly series exploring questions about death, memory, grief, identity, and law through books, poetry, non-fiction, and film.

Hosted as part of the Death & Law Interdisciplinary Explorations, with generous support from the Royal Society of Edinburgh and in partnership with Aberdeen City Libraries, these sessions are open to everyone. No specialist knowledge is required, and you are welcome whether or not you have read the book or watched the film. Join us for a single session or the full series, and bring your own perspective to the conversation.

The University of Aberdeen's Death & Law Research Project has marked a successful series of interdisciplinary events, bringing together researchers from law, anthropology, ethnology and beyond to tackle contemporary questions around death, memory, AI and justice.

Supported by a Royal Society of Edinburgh Research Collaboration Grant, the project continues to create space for innovative conversations across disciplines, with more events planned later this year.
