A University of Aberdeen scientist will establish Scotland’s only Animal Replacement Centre (ARC), advancing human-specific, animal-free approaches in cancer research. 👏

Professor Valerie Speirs, Chair in Molecular Oncology, has received funding from the Centre for Human Specific Research to establish the UK’s third ARC within the University’s Institute of Medical Sciences.

The centre will focus on developing innovative human-specific methodologies, including advanced human breast tissue models, helping to replace the use of animals in medical research while supporting the next generation of research leaders.

Professor Speirs said: “The Centre for Human Specific Research ARC grant will allow my team to continue building our work towards using animal-free approaches in cancer, as well as supporting early to mid-career researchers with innovative ideas for animal-free approaches but maybe don’t know where to start. Currently our work is focused on identifying and implementing robust animal-free replacements in cell culture, which is one of the bread-and-butter experimental approaches that many scientists use."

Congratulations to Dr Ross MacDonald on winning the Best Oral Abstract and Presentation Award at the The British Pain Society Annual Scientific Meeting 2026! 👏

Epidemiology Group Research Fellow Dr MacDonald received the prestigious award for presenting findings from the Consortium Against Pain inEquality (CAPE) study, exploring the relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the development of chronic pain in adulthood.

Using data from nearly 15,000 participants, the research showed that the accumulation of adversity across childhood and adolescence, rather than a single event alone, was the strongest predictor of chronic multi-site pain by age 26.

The findings highlight the importance of trauma-informed approaches to prevention and pain management throughout childhood and adolescence.

These engagement events are bringing together organisations across regional supply chains to explore nature-based food solutions that can improve climate resilience, support healthier food production, and help Scotland adapt to future environmental challenges.

Discussions will focus on sustainable supply chains, alternative crops, best practice for less favourable land, and how agriculture can contribute to Scotland’s climate targets while restoring nature and protecting biodiversity.

Creating a sustainable food system requires collaboration, innovation, and ambition from farm to fork and beyond.

Mental health in childhood doesn’t just affect the present — it can shape the future.

New research from the University of Aberdeen found that childhood mental illness, including anxiety, low mood, and ADHD, is strongly linked to poorer economic outcomes in adulthood, including higher unemployment and benefit claims.

The findings reinforce the importance of early detection, intervention, and support for children and young people struggling with mental health challenges. Investing in children’s wellbeing isn’t just compassionate healthcare, it’s essential for building healthier futures and a stronger economy.

The University of Aberdeen has launched a new, patient-focused IVF success calculator, designed to provide clearer, personalised insights for individuals and couples considering fertility treatment.

Powered by comprehensive UK-wide data from licensed fertility treatments, the free tool offers tailored success estimates based on factors such as age and diagnosis. It also allows users to explore how success rates can evolve across multiple IVF and ICSI cycles—supporting more informed decision-making at every stage of the journey.

Fertility treatment often involves significant emotional, physical and financial investment, and understanding realistic outcomes is key. This redesigned calculator combines updated data with an intuitive, user-centred interface, developed in collaboration with the University’s Aberdeen Software Factory.

By translating complex national data into accessible, evidence-based insights, this initiative highlights how research and digital innovation can work together to improve patient experience and support better health outcomes.

28/05/2026

A national collaboration led by the University of Aberdeen and Scotland’s other medical schools has been awarded £100,000 from the Scottish Government. This funding will support the integration of healthcare sustainability into medical degrees across the country.

This initiative stems from the Scottish Consortium for Sustainability in Medicine (SCfSiM) white paper, “A ‘Once for Scotland’ Approach to Embed Sustainable Healthcare Education in Undergraduate Medical Training”. The paper was co-authored by Dr Alison Jack and Dr Morven Wilson, who also attended the launch of the paper at the Scottish Parliament. Fourth-year medical student Andre Carpio presented his research on awareness of sustainability and the impact of climate change on health within the medical curriculum.

The £100k funding award will support the appointment of a Scottish Clinical Leadership Fellow who will lead coordinated work across all Scottish medical schools to embed principles of sustainable healthcare within medical curricula, in alignment with NHS Scotland climate commitments and the Scottish Government target of net zero by 2040.

27/05/2026

Broken heart syndrome can closely resemble a heart attack, but unlike a heart attack, it is not caused by blocked arteries. Instead, it is linked to a weakening of the heart muscle, often triggered by sudden emotional stress. Treatment specific to this condition has remained a mystery, but a new clinical trial beginning in the University of Aberdeen aims to change that.

The trial, led by Professor Dana Dawson, Chair in Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Aberdeen and Consultant Cardiologist at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, has been funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) to test the effectiveness of renin-angiotensin system (RAS) inhibitors in treating broken heart syndrome.

This trial will involve scientists and clinicians from Aberdeen, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Leeds, Leicester, Belfast and almost 1,000 takotsubo patients from 40 hospitals across the country.
