A team of experts led by the University of Aberdeen will, for the first time, establish the way that maternity care should be delivered to pregnant women with multiple long term health conditions.

Made possible by an award of £1.3 million from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), the team say their results could benefit the almost one in five women who receive maternity care whilst also managing two or more long term health conditions.

Pregnant women with multiple long term health conditions are at double the risk of pre-term birth and 9 times more likely to die during pregnancy than those without these health complications. Despite this, there is currently no defined care requirements for pregnant women with more than one long term health condition.

Dr Mairead Black will lead a team to develop a care bundle specifically to help these women.

Mary Hunter (pictured) has lived with serious long‑term health conditions since her teens, making both her pregnancies high‑risk and emotionally exhausting. She faced kidney failure, placenta praevia, repeated hospital admissions and major medical decisions with limited specialist support. Mary is backing our new maternity care project so no woman has to navigate complex pregnancy alone, saying joined‑up care would have made an enormous difference to her and her family.

More than 50 members of staff, with the backing of the University of Aberdeen and the Aberdeen Medico-Chirurgical Society, have recorded their recollections, some written, some oral, of their specialties in and around Aberdeen in the second half of the 20th century, and some more recently, covering developments in the first 70 years of the NHS. These records are unique and personal. Although written and recorded by experts in their fields, they are human stories of change and adaptation. http://abdn.io/2oF

Photographer and alumnus Kieran Dodds' latest work, featured in a recent BBC article, explores the lives of people with red hair across the United States and reveals an unexpected connection to their Scottish roots. Through a series of striking portraits, the project examines themes of identity, ancestry and belonging, uncovering personal stories that highlight the cultural ties between Scotland and communities throughout the US.

For Kieran Dodds, photographing people with red hair has become something of an obsession over the past decade or more.
