Great to meet you all for 60th lunch today. We didn't have time for pinning any images you may have brought to noticeboard as planned. So please send them to Anoush Simon HOD [email protected] together with your memories so can be included in her 60th celebration project. Many thanks to Linda Tomos for her guest talk - as someone said - we always learn something new from Linda's presentations. For those staying on for the University reunion events have a great time

60 years of Information Studies at Aber
Did you study or work at CLW (College of Librarianship Wales), DILS (Department of Information and Library Studies) or DIS (Department of Information Studies) in Aberystwyth, any time from 1964 onwards? Help us celebrate 60 years with our reminiscence project, gathering memories and memorabilia. See https://libraryschool.aber.ac.uk/ to find out more. We’d love to hear from you.

In addition to our research project on student reminiscences of CLW, DILS and DIS, we are also holding a celebratory event to mark 60 years of information studies at Aber. Alumni may already be aware of the Aberystwyth University annual Reunion Weekend that is happening in June (info here: https://www.osaaber.org/post/osa-alumni-reunion-2025-fri-20th-sun-22nd-june and here: https://www.aber.ac.uk/en/development/newsandevents/). As a part of this event, DIS are hosting a celebration lunch for our past students and staff on Saturday 21st. All students - and staff - of CLW, DILS and DIS are welcome!
If you are planning on attending the whole Reunion Weekend (including the celebration lunch), click here to book https://tinyurl.com/3cb4jddm
Or contact/message Anoush ([email protected]) for further details about celebration lunch.

Students very much enjoyed their visit and tour of Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru | The National Library of Wales during the study school last week. Many thanks to the NLW staff. It came after the wonderful Guest Speaker presentation from Linda Tomos. Linda ended her talk showing us some items from the NLW attic - and while students did not see that - apparently some did get to visit the basement! Photo by Tanya Rogers.

Colleagues and former students will be sad to hear of the recent death of Professor Frank Hogg OBE, the first Principle of The College of Librarianship Wales. When it was established in 1964, CLW was intended to be a small college with an annual intake of 30, focused on the development of the profession in Wales. By 1968, under Frank’s visionary leadership, CLW had become the largest library school in the UK attracting staff and students from the UK and throughout the world.
In 1989, CLW amalgamated into Aberystwyth University and became the Department of Information Studies. The development of distance learning and new programmes in Archives and Records Management further developed his vision of a department that is both local to Wales and global in reach.
Frank retired at this time but continued to be active in various consultancy and voluntary roles in Aberystwyth and beyond. In 2019, he was made an Honorary Fellow of Aberystwyth University, in acknowledgement of his remarkable contribution to library education. You can read about his achievements and impact on the development of the profession here.

We are grateful for his friendship and support for the Department throughout these years.
