The 3rd Year Fiction Film Module screening took place in May. A showcase of talent from our BA Filmmaking and BA Film and Television Studies students. The films were of such high standard this year and we look forward to seeing what these new graduates will do next!

Cynhaliwyd y dangosiad ar gyfer Modiwl Ffilm Ffuglennol y 3edd Flwyddyn ym mis Mai. Arddangosfa o dalent gan ein myfyrwyr BA Cynhyrchu Ffilmiau a BA Astudiaethau Ffilm a Theledu. Roedd y ffilmiau o safon mor uchel eleni ac edrychwn ymlaen at weld beth fydd y graddedigion newydd hyn yn ei wneud nesaf!

Filmmakers need to know about Synecdoche (pronounced si-nek-duh-kee). Synecdoche is a figure of speech, more accurately a trope, that basically means part-for-whole. The shower scene in Hitchock’s ‘Psycho’ is a good example of how it works. The murder is suggested by showing a series of close ups: a shower head, a knife, a screaming mouth, a terrified eye. In the words of Robert Hariman and John Louis Lucaites (2007), ‘Every image suggests a world that extends far outside the pictorial frame.’ You can suggest this too in your film by focussing on the closeups—it can maximises the impact of a scene.

Hariman, Robert & John Louis Lucaites (2007) No Caption Needed: Iconic Photographs, Public Culture, and Liberal Democracy. Chicago, IL: University of Chicago Press.

Mae angen i wneuthurwyr ffilm wybod am Synecdoche (yngenir si-nek-duh-kee). Mae Synecdoche yn ffigwr lleferydd, yn fwy cywir trope, sy'n golygu rhan-am-gyfan yn y bôn. Mae’r olygfa gawod yn ‘Psycho’ Hitchock yn enghraifft dda o sut mae’n gweithio. Mae'r llofruddiaeth yn cael ei awgrymu trwy ddangos cyfres o ddigwyddiadau agos: pen cawod, cyllell, ceg yn sgrechian, llygad ofnus. Yng ngeiriau Robert Hariman a John Louis Lucaites (2007), ‘Mae pob delwedd yn awgrymu byd sy’n ymestyn ymhell y tu allan i’r ffrâm ddarluniadol.’ Gallwch awgrymu hyn hefyd yn eich ffilm drwy ganolbwyntio ar y closau—gall wneud y mwyaf o effaith a golygfa.

4 people I follow on Instagram

I’m Dr Rod Munday. I teach sound design on the filmmaking scheme at Aberystywth University. These are four foley artists/sound designers who I follow on Instagram. Foley is the live performance of sound effects to picture. It was named after Ray Foley who invented the job in the 1920s. I follow these people because they come up innovative and imaginative solutions to sound design challenges.
