We’ve been collaborating with land-based skills and training organisation Lantra for over a decade now, in particular through IBERS Distance Learning and the Farming Connect scheme as we work to facilitate the exchange of scientific research across the Welsh agricultural and forestry sectors.

As part of this ongoing partnership, we were delighted to welcome LANTRA’s Wales Director Kevin Thomas and Horticulture Co-operation and Supply Chain Manager Sarah Gould to IBERS once more last week.

It was an opportunity to share updates on our latest research projects and discuss future plans as well as show them some of the state-of-the-art glasshouse and biorefining facilities on our Gogerddan campus. We also took them out into the fields to see the experimental plots led by our long-term commercial partners Germinal Horizon, before going on to see our new Future Grazing Platform for livestock on Penglais.

Ry’n ni wedi bod yn cydweithio â sefydliad hyfforddiant a sgiliau tir Lantra ers dros ddegawd bellach, yn enwedig drwy IBERS Distance Learning a gynllun Cyswllt Ffermio, gan gefnogi cyfnewid ymchwil wyddonol ar draws sectorau amaethyddol a choedwigaeth Cymru.

Fel rhan o'r bartneriaeth hir hon, roeddem wrth ein bodd yn croesawu Cyfarwyddwr Lantra Cymru, Kevin Thomas, a Rheolwr Cadwyn Gyflenwi a Chydweithrediad Garddwriaeth, Sarah Gould, yn Ă´l i IBERS yr wythnos diwethaf.

Roedd eu hymweliad yn gyfle i rannu diweddariadau ar ein prosiectau ymchwil cyfredol a thrafod cynlluniau ar gyfer y dyfodol, yn ogystal â dangos rhai o’r cyfleusterau bioburo a’r tai gwydr o’r radd flaenaf sydd gennym ar gampws Gogerddan. Aethon ni allan i’r maes hefyd i weld y lleiniau arbrofol sy’n cael eu harwain gan ein partneriaid masnachol hirdymor Germinal Horizon, cyn mynd ymlaen i glywed am ein Platfform Pori’r Dyfodol newydd ar Benglais.

Diolch am ddod draw!

Technician Commitment turns 9 🎉

IBERS joined the Technician Commitment community last year, and we’ve been busy developing our self-assessment and Action Plan since.

One initiative from the IBERS Technician Commitment Working Group that stands out for us so far, is recognising the contributions of our staff through the rollout of long service badges. Something that was too good to keep just for technical staff, so it was rolled out across the Institute to a warm reception.

It’s a small but meaningful step in ensuring technicians feel valued and visible, which sits at the heart of our Technician Commitment journey.

We’re proud to be part of a community driving positive change for technicians across the sector.

Yr Ymrwymiad i Dechnegwyr yn 9 oed 🎉

Ymunodd IBERS â chymuned yr Ymrwymiad i Dechnegwyr y llynedd, ac ers hynny ry’n ni wedi bod yn brysur yn datblygu ein hunanasesiad a’n Cynllun Gweithredu.

Un o’r mentrau i’w rhoi ar waith gan Weithgor Yr Ymrwymiad i Dechnegwyr yma yn IBERS yw cydnabod cyfraniadau ein staff trwy gyflwyno bathodynnau gwasanaeth hir. Penderfynwyd y dylid eu cyflwyno nid yn unig i staff technegol ond cydweithwyr ar draws yr Athrofa ac fe gafodd hynny groeso cynnes.

Mae’n gam bach ond ystyrlon sy’n help i sicrhau bod technegwyr yn teimlo’n werthfawr ac yn weladwy – egwyddorion sydd wrth wraidd ein taith ar hyd yr Ymrwymiad i Dechnegwyr.

Ry’n ni’n falch o fod yn rhan o gymuned sy’n gyrru newid cadarnhaol i dechnegwyr ar draws y sector.

We are pleased to announce that registration is now open for the Learned Society of Wales Early-Career Researchers’ Colloquium 2026, taking place at Aberystwyth University on 29–30 June 2026. Now in its fourth year, the Colloquium brings together researchers from across Wales and all disciplines for two days of interdisciplinary networking, professional development, and collaboration in a supportive environment. The event is co-designed with researchers, in partnership with the Aberystwyth University ECR Network.

Attendance is free, and travel and accommodation bursaries are available. Registration will close on 12 June (or earlier if capacity is reached), so early registration is strongly encouraged. As this year’s Colloquium is being held here in Aberystwyth, we strongly encourage all ECRs to take part. It is a valuable opportunity to connect with peers, build new collaborations, and strengthen our local ECR community.

Llongyfarchiadau mawr i Rhian Griffiths, myfyrwraig Amaethyddiaeth yn ei blwyddyn olaf, ar ddod i’r brig yng Ngwobrau Pinnacle The Farmers Club ar gyfer rhagoriaeth mewn rheoli busnes - cystadleuaeth uchel ei bri sy'n cydnabod y doniau gorau sy’n dod i’r amlwg yn y sector amaethyddol ledled y DU.

Llongyfarchiadau hefyd i Cameron Anderson, sy’n astudio Amaethyddiaeth a Rheolaeth Busnes yn Aberystwyth, ar gyrraedd y rownd derfynol.

Dwy enghraifft wych o sut mae gwaith myfyrwyr Aberystwyth yn trosi i effaith amaethyddol y byd go iawn ac yn cael eu cydnabod gan y diwydiant.

Maurice Bosch (IBERS) at Plant Walk 2026 explores how mechanical stimulation —like wind or touch— makes wheat stems stronger. The secret? The cell wall reshuffles its components rather than just adding more material. Touch shapes structure!

Sarah is a Research Development Officer at IBERS, playing a vital role in supporting the Institute’s research community.

Her role is highly varied — on any given day Sarah may be helping academics develop grant proposals, identifying suitable funding opportunities, organising training events for IBERS staff, supporting the development of the Technician Commitment, attending meetings, or responding to a wide range of queries.

What does Sarah enjoy most about her work?
👉 The variety. Sarah values working in an environment where cutting edge research sits at the heart of the Institute’s mission and enjoys collaborating with colleagues across IBERS. The diversity of tasks keeps the role engaging and rewarding.

An achievement she’s most proud of?
🎓 Completing her PhD while juggling research with a baby on her knee – balancing academic work with motherhood and everything else life decided to throw her way.

Fun fact:
🚴 Sarah has cycled three quarters of the way across France with her family, a tent, and a baguette attached to her bike — and one day plans to finish the journey and finally reach the Mediterranean on two wheels. Happiest when either in or on the sea. She also has a memorable wildlife encounter story involving being punched on the nose by a baboon… but that’s one for another day!

👏 Thank you Sarah for supporting IBERS researchers and helping great ideas turn into funded research.

Mae Sarah yn Swyddog Datblygu Ymchwil yn IBERS, ac mae ganddi rĂ´l hollbwysig yn cefnogi cymuned ymchwil y Sefydliad.

Mae ei rôl yn amrywiol iawn – ar unrhyw ddiwrnod penodol gall Sarah fod yn helpu academyddion i ddatblygu ceisiadau am grant, yn chwilio am gyfleoedd ariannu addas, yn trefnu digwyddiadau hyfforddi ar gyfer staff IBERS, yn cefnogi datblygiad yr Ymrwymiad i Dechnegwyr, yn mynychu cyfarfodydd, neu’n ymateb i ystod eang o ymholiadau.

Beth mae Sarah yn ei fwynhau fwyaf am ei gwaith?
👉 Yr amrywiaeth. Mae Sarah yn gwerthfawrogi gweithio mewn amgylchedd lle mae ymchwil arloesol yn ganolog i genhadaeth y Sefydliad ac mae’n mwynhau cydweithio â chydweithwyr ar draws IBERS. Mae amrywiaeth y tasgau yn cadw’r rôl yn ddifyr ac yn werth chweil.

Pa gyflawniad y mae hi’n fwyaf balch ohono?
🎓 Cwblhau ei PhD wrth jyglo’r ymchwil gyda babi ar ei glin – cydbwyso gwaith academaidd â bod yn fam a phopeth arall y penderfynodd bywyd ei daflu ati.

Ffaith hwyliog:
🚴 Mae Sarah wedi beicio tri chwarter o’r ffordd ar draws Ffrainc gyda’i theulu, pabell, a bagét wedi’i glymu i’w beic – ac un diwrnod mae’n bwriadu gorffen y daith a chyrraedd Môr y Canoldir ar ddwy olwyn. Mae hi ar ei hapusaf pan mae hi naill ai yn y môr neu arno. Mae ganddi hefyd stori gofiadwy am fywyd gwyllt sef cael ei dyrnu yn ei thrwyn gan fabŵn… ond stori ar gyfer diwrnod arall yw honno!

👏 Diolch i Sarah am gefnogi ymchwilwyr IBERS a helpu syniadau gwych i droi’n ymchwil wedi’i ariannu.
