"In my work in palliative care, I’ve nursed thousands of dying people. Now I’m one of many accompanying a dying civilisation. The diagnosis is pretty much incontestable, although the precise manner of its termination is still playing itself out."

"...there will be no softening of the collapse of societies, for people or wider nature, unless more of us discover and prioritise our own spiritual response to this predicament. That is not a summons to fluffy feel-good spiritual experiences to keep the horrors at bay. It is a summons to fierce and profound inquiry, a deep plunge into the joypain of existence, and a wholly (holy!) different perspective on reality and what it is to be human in that reality. Such a Way lifts (or sinks) us into an utterly different relationship and perception of life; of self and that which is beyond the self. Without that we shall persist in limited perceptions of what it is to be human and part of all of life. Without it we would continue deploying our good intentions and rearranging bits and pieces of ordinary reality without fundamentally changing our relationship to that reality."

As societies breakdown, we will need peer-to-peer collaboration, including commons-based enterprise and exchange systems. This is a key takeaway from my book , focused on in a book review from Shareable written by currency innovation guru Stephen DeMeulenaere . Perhaps a bit more hopeful than the book itself, the review is a nice call to arms for a freedom-loving environmentalism.

The draft final communique from came out a couple of days ago. It reflected the 'corporate capture' of COP26, and the failure to launch a plan that responds to climate reality. That is criticised today in a public letter signed by over 200 scholars from over 30 countries. Any spin today about nice words between USA and China should not distract us or journalists from who and what is being served by the current international policy agenda on global heating - and the implications of their failure to try to transform economies and prepare properly for troubles ahead.

Hundreds of scholars sign open letter urging communities to lead their own ‘emergency response’ after ‘failure’ of Cop26 to slash dangerous greenhouse gas emissions

‘Citizenship and Sustainability of Organizations: Exploring and Spanning the Boundaries’, book launch. Tuesday 23 March from 16:00-17:30 GMT.

The University of Cumbria’s Initiative for Leadership and Sustainability (IFLAS) and the Institute of Business, Industry and Leadership (Business, industry and leadership) are delighted to announce the online launch of a new book by two of our academic staff:

‘Citizenship and Sustainability of Organizations: Exploring and Spanning the Boundaries’, edited by David F. Murphy and Alison Marshall published in January 2021.

This edited collection is the introductory volume of a new Routledge book series with the same name: 'Citizenship and Sustainability in Organizations’.

The Online Book Launch on 23 March will be chaired by Dr Stephen Gibbs, Principal Lecturer in Business and Leadership, and will include an interactive panel discussion with contributing authors and the editors.

"Citizenship and Sustainability of Organizations: Exploring and Spanning the Boundaries "offers an opening for debates on critical current issues, particularly those that may be too new to yet be the subject of theoretical studies.

The volume brings together chapter authors who are leading thinkers who are pushing the boundaries of conventional thinking about corporate citizenship and sustainability to advocate and generate innovative models and practices.

We plan to stimulate discussion at the online launch and you will be invited to actively contribute.
