Just received this from a happy student - lovely for them and really nice to get comments like this as well -

'Hi, Rowena

Just wanted to let you know that I passed my functional skills exam having got 75%.

I just wanted to say thank you. You were a massive part of why I passed and I really appreciate the time you spent helping me.

All the best,
Jack'

I hope Jack goes on and achieves many more goals in his future

Well - All that hard work you have that young people have been putting in for the last year - it is now time to show what you can do. Thursday is the first of the GCSE Maths exams and remember - you don't need to get 100%. Just work through the questions at a steady pace and don't spend too long on questions that have just 1 or 2 marks or those that you really don't understand. The questions do get more tricky as you progress through the paper so try to do all the early questions and allow more time for the ones after about half way through. Do your best and goo luck to all my students and everyone sitting their maths GCSE tomorrow.

Is your child working towards the 11+ for September 2026? It may seem like a long way away but believe me the time goes very quickly once the summer term starts. If you haven't booked a mock test for your child I strongly recommend that you do so soon as this experience will simulate the real thing. They get a chance to answer under exam conditions all elements including Maths, English and Reasoning and work under time pressure. This cannot really be replicated in the same way at home. Furthermore, they get a standardised score which is based on their age and a complicated formula based on the number of questions and the level of difficulty.
Even if you think your child is doing really well - this test is really valuable to help handle exam nerves for the real thing as well as work on those areas which aren't as strong as you hope.
Have a look around for a good provider that offers this experience and book your child in ASAP

Gosh! isn't the year just flying by? Christmas and New year gone and now it's Easter and then it's towards summer exams and summer holidays. So if you have a child who is currently in year 4 and you want them to sit the 11+ in 2027 it might be a good time to check their current skills levels now before it's august and year 5 starts.
I would recommend that their times tables are fluent up to 12 and they are competent at the other three operations; addition, subtraction and division. This is vital as these functions underpin Maths and if they struggle here they will find all Maths problems challenging.
I also recommend that they practice regular spelling as increasingly children in the 8-10 age group are unable to spell common words and this is a tested element in the 11+ exam.
At this stage there is plenty of time to practice these topics so they will be ready in September for more structured tuition. If you make it fun they won't mind at all and it will really benefit them as well.
Have a great Easter!

It's that time of year again - Easter approaching and then - the summer exams are upon us - in fact the first GCSE Maths exam is May 14th - that's just 10 weeks away and will go really quickly.
But there is time to brush up on those topics that you might be struggling with and there are always the predicted questions on percentages, ration, algebra and other staple topics
Make sure you are well prepared for the grade you want and if you think you need a little extra support over the Easter break - please get in touch - could make all the difference

What do you think is the greatest asset to achieving success in your exams? Hard work? talent? Excellent teachers? Well all these things are important - of course they are - nothing happens without effort. But the greatest asset is actually self-belief - you might be fantastic at your school work but if you don't believe you are good- then you won't reach your full potential. On the other hand if you really need to work hard to get the grades you want and you BELIEVE that you can do it - you will go far.
School is the start of your life but it can also set the way you think to go forward in life- so start believing in yourself and see the difference!

So I went to a client last night - first time I'd seen them since before Christmas and how surprised was I? A belated Christmas present. A mug and spoon. Some marshmallows and some sachets of hot chocolate. Yummy - just the thing for these cool winter nights!!

Some people hate maths - some love it! Working towars passing exams isn't just about getting the grade you want or need - it also about preparing yourself for the future - futher education or the world of work and it is about application - results don't just happen by osmosis - but that feeling of achieving something when you know you have worked hard is a reard in itself
